off topic...

linkous, do we have a post punk thread on 3dd? i'm asking.
Can't remember , but if not we should. I do seem to remember saying on some thread or other that there may be a difference of opinion over what post punk means in the UK and US. Post punk in the UK described bands such as PIL, Wire, Gang Of 4, Joy Division etc - bands who sounded a bit "weirder" and more off kilter than the 1234 garage rock of the punk bands, these bands and others also had a bit of a funkier element to their sound with emphasis on bass and drums. My impression of what post punk means in the US is that it is bands from the early 80's such as Black Flag, X, Dead Kennedys, Husker Du etc who initially stayed true to that frantic energy and thrash of the "original" punk bands of the mid to late 70's.

I could be miles off though in regards to my impression of US post punk.

I've been on a massive Post-Punk kick going on about 2 months now and it's an incredibly fertile and diverse rabbit hole to plunge down. There is so much amazing music to mine from that time period/scene. To my way of thinking, I think linkous' definition/characterization of what post-punk is is pretty spot on. I've been listening to and reading up on the genre quite a bit lately, and many of the purists seem to define it as beginning with Public Image Limited in '78 and pretty much concluding around '82. Coming from an American perspective, I have a little looser definition/time frame for it. I think the coining of the term is most definitely a UK thing, but there is absolutely an American aspect to it. To my ears, pre-1978 bands like Television, Talking Heads, Suicide, Devo and Pere Ubu are part of the conversation. Other US bands that are significant players in the post-punk movement include XTC, The Feelies, Wipers and Mission of Burma. I'm on the fence with bands like the Minutemen (their early stuff is certainly post-punk in both time period and sound), Violent Femmes and Husker Du. I can be swayed either way. A few other American post-punk bands are James Chance & the Contortions, The Method Actors, Pylon, and Tuxedomoon. I know I am in the minority on my next point, but, after their self-titled debut, The Clash are a post-punk band. I'm not sure how one can or does classify The Jam. They sound post-punky to me, but they never to be part of the post-punk discussion. Another thing I have noticed about post-punk is the strong presence of female artists - The Raincoats, The Slits, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Young Marble Giants, Pylon, Marine Girls, The B 52's, early Blondie, Kleenex, Delta 5, Bush Tetras, and X-Ray Spex, to name a few. I see the widely-accepted post-punk giants as the following:

UK Division
Public Image Limited
The Fall
Gang of Four
Joy Division
Wire

US Division
Television
Talking Heads
Devo
Pere Ubu
Mission of Burma

Anyhow, that's my .02 on post-punk. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy this post-punk primer I put together on Spotify.

Swell Maps are a good band, and i am kinda surprised that Nikki Sudden's solo work doesn't get much love around these parts. there's a lot of it that i bet people would dig.

the slide work on this song still gives me chills. (if it doesn't play, the song i am referring to is Evangaline)

What Clams said! :)

... I remember vaguely we have been touching on this subject in another thread before, and that linkous did not particularly agree with my loose "definition" including younger bands that were inspired by the first wave of punk but took a couple of more years before they came onto the scene in the early 80's. Some bands that would be labeled as Post Punk might also be labelled as New Wave. I find categorizing music extremely difficult, and if they are meant to describe the music only and not image, a scene linked to geographical origins in one form or another etc. (not saying they are) then lots of bands may belong in more that one category, from song to song, or album to album.

Some of these post-punk bands sound more like New Wave to me, Elvis Costello being Exhibit A. Oh, wait--I see RolandK already said that. Well, I think he's right. And I'd disagree with cortez's characterization of James Chance & the Contortions, as I'd always thought of them as part of the No Wave, whatever that was. ;-)

seems to me that "post punk" bands were better musicians that "punk" bands. they wanted the music to be noticed...punk was all about the aggressive and in your face. post punkers had that too, but they colored it with more virtuosity......and dance-ability.

certainly, an oversimplification.

gang of 4 and television guitar dudes were fucking fantastic. and if we are counting elvis costello, that dude can sure play.

fucking cortez.

or some shit like that.

i don't think elvis costello was post punk. same era and locale but more of a supremely talented, traditional song and dance man. although he was a live wire force of fierce punk energy on stage.

to my ear.....

elvis costello was ripping off ray davies.

gang of four were ripping off dave davies.

not a small difference.

suck on that cortez. #teamdave

or some shit like that.

You can hear him trying on different styles in the pre-Stiff demos, just like you can hear Bruce doing it on the first two discs--especially the first--of Tracks.

I'm going to suggest that to one of the biggest Kinks and Gang of Four fans (not that he hates Elvis or anything) and see how far the pieces of his head scatter when it explodes.

a friend of mine (with a pretty deep musical knowledge, as he writes for a variety of publications) just posted this on facebook and i agree 100%
I am being totally biased, nostalgic, and selfish but also objective and factually accurate when I say that the independent rock-based music coming out of New Zealand starting in the 80s and 90's and continuing today is the greatest collective achievement of any sentient beings in the history of the universe.

i mean, listen to this guitar tone from 1980!!!

if you can find a copy, Mark Burgess published an auto-biography a few years back called A View From A Hill. there are an annoying amount of typos in it (couldn't someone proofread it?) but it's a very good read.
