If KOL's next album is like their last, add them to the list.

The Cure -- their first four albums were very guitar oriented psychedelia.

My first thought also.

Add Doobie Brothers when they added Mike McDonald.
Their first 3 or 4 albums were very good.

uhhh Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Disintegration are a far cry from what I would call "sell out". Now the cure in the 90's, welll not so good.

Lets add Chicago to the list.

i think it's a fine line between a sell out and growing/changing as an artist or being a product of the changing times

Sir Elton does NOT belong on that list..if you're true to what you love, then you can't be a sell out IMO

My first thought when I saw the title of this thread was Rod Stewart. Rod's got to top the list.

I've said this before, but what the hell, i haven't disagreed w/ dime in at least 12 hours, so:

While Rod Stewart may be among the biggest wastes of talent ever, I don't know that he's a sellout 'cause he never pretended to be in it for anything other than the broads & booze and, a little later, the money.

U2 is similar: their (or at least bono's) ambition was always to be the biggest band in the world. Not only did they achieve it, it seems to me that they got there w/ fewer artistic compromises than most who take that path. But of course that depends on what you think of The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, and I know what TC thinks of those ;)

See "among the biggest wastes of talent ever". We don't disagree about the quality or direction of the music after the classic albums, just whether that constitutes a sellout.

The transformation of the Jefferson Aviators (from Airplane to Starship) comes to mind.
And I know many will vehemently disagree, but I'd also add The Who and The Beach Boys to the list.

Calling them sellouts is giving them too much credit. They never played a show before signing a record contract. Half the band couldn't even play yet. They're a slightly edgier Jonas Brothers, always have been.

There is no "selling out", there is just "buying in"

most bands form because they want to be giant rock stars. Their early work is usually raw (due to no funding for recording), and fans latch onto this work like it's pure and untouchable. Then, when the band actually achieves the success they've always strived for, they're suddenly assholes. I don't get it.

Typical. Trying to ruin our good clean fun.

I don't think anyone's begrudging a band's right to become successful or to grow artistically as they get older. I think this thread is more about bands that lost their way musically once they started having success and the money started coming in. Yes, it is possible to become successful and yet still maintain a consistent level of artistic integrity. Springsteen, U2 and Pearl Jam come to mind, and to a lesser extent because they haven't reached that level of success, DBT. But it's pretty clear that a lot of bands just want to cash in with little to no regard for the quality of schlock they put out.
