The Mother Hips

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

The Mother Hips

Post by walthers »

I know that WWCD is familiar with this band and they are one of my all time favorites. They play their annual holiday shows every year in S.F and in the last few years they have been doing special sets, full albums, etc one of the nights. This year they played their third "Ultimate Setliat Show" where fans can submit their sets and the band chooses one to play. All of them are great and show career spanning tunes, this years is no exception. Anyway, they are giving this years away for free on their site so I thought I'd post it here for anyone interested. At least you get a high quality recording to check out a band you might not have heard of before.

Thanks for posting this, I didn't realize they were giving this away. A friend actually had me submit his ultimate setlist for him, no idea if he "won"

You're welcome. I just happened to stumble upon it today so figured I would post it. I went to the first ultimate set list show at cafe du noir and that was the only time I submitted one, I didn't win but a guy named Craig did. The band had a good time making Craig's list jokes.

Love the Hips! Love Brokedown in Bakersfield and Nicki Bluhm and her Gramblers too. I love that whole scene! The Hips' Merle Haggard tribute show was one of my favorite recordings from last year.

Very cool, I figured there were some people here that liked it. I agree their whole scene is great and if you liked the Haggard show with the covers Clams, you will dig their recording of Neil Youngs Everybody Knows This is Nowhere album.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing, I did not realize they were married 10 years, lots of shows and music, the time just flies.

Yeah crazy that she stuck with him through all of that and that he was the one to come forward and ask for a divorce. But who am I to judge. Anyway sounds like she's in a good place right now, so good for her.

Seeing them here in late November, they are doing a benefit for the victims of the fires in Shasta County. It's the same night at Lyle Lovett/Robert Earl Keen on campus, I plan on doing both. The Lovett/REK show starts at 7:30 and should be over before the Hips go on. And I only have to walk about 75-100 yards to go from one venue to the other

Then seeing two of the holiday shows in December, Saturday night at the GAMH and then the Sunday acoustic matinee at Slim's

hoping to talk Jen into catching at least one of the shows in Sacramento just before New Years

I saw them Thursday night in LA and they were great. It had been a couple of years since they played here and they brought it. Tim looks healthy and the band is in good spirits. New bass player Brian Rashap fits right in. The setlist was a good mix of old and new. Overall a killer show. Go see them when you can.

Seeing Tim play solo here in Chico tomorrow. plus I've seen four Hips shows this summer (also a 3-night run Oct 10-12), so figured that is a good enough reason to post a few pics. They have been in exceptional form this summer. Saw a great house concert in Sacramento thanks to our very own walthers but didn't get any usable pics from that night (was having too much fun  ) At the OPL show Ben Young, son of some guy named Neil, was 3 feet to my right for most of the second set
