Re: 2017 Album Releases
Due February 17. Thanks for the heads up in the Son Volt thread.
We are excited to announce the release of Son Volt’s new album, Notes of Blue (Thirty Tigers), on February 17, 2017 (simultaneous release in UK, EU, Australia & New Zealand).
The 10 songs on Notes of Blue are inspired by the spirit of the blues, but not the standard blues as most know it. The unique and haunting tunings of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake were all points of exploration for Farrar for the new collection. The album opens with the country soul of “Promise The World”, followed by “Back Against The Wall”, a song that could stand alongside the great Son Volt songs of their early albums. However, Notes Of Blue reflects the blues as it resides in the folk tradition, but heavily amplified. The primal stomp of “Cherokee St”, the frenetic guitar on “Static” and the raw slide in “Sinking Down” exude grit and attitude. Conversely, tracks such as “The Storm” and “Cairo and Southern” seamlessly meld blues with hypnotic melodies that add a unique balance to Notes of Blue.

Ehhhhhhhh, we'll see about that. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Farrar going the "genre exercises" route. Honky Toni was completely underwhelming

Jay Farrar hasn't made a great album since Trace.
Every Son Volt album has a couple brilliant tracks, but 75% of it just doesn't land for me.

Gotta say I agree with this. I liked Honky Tonk to start with. I probably have t listened to it in a couple of years.Zip City wrote:Ehhhhhhhh, we'll see about that. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Farrar going the "genre exercises" route. Honky Toni was completely underwhelming

They've been posting minute or so long samples of various tracks on their FB feed. Ya never know what version of Jay your gonna get but this one might be pretty rocking.
DBT makes lots of good music but I don't expect them to ever get near SRO or Deco Day again.
I'm not gonna argue, as you've framed it as your subjective take on things. Just keep in mind that Trace is one of the greatest albums in recent decades. So, context and all.Iowan wrote:Jay Farrar hasn't made a great album since Trace.

I totally get that. Trace is a stone cold masterpiece, and every SV album has something worth the price of admission. But it's rare for me to spin any of the other in their entiretyBeebs wrote:They've been posting minute or so long samples of various tracks on their FB feed. Even Trace hasn't held up well over time (IMO). About half classic, half pretty good.

And I actually think that Straightaways was only a slight decline. That's a fucking great record too.
The only heavy blues thing Jay has done was Buzz And Grind off the Gob Iron album and it kicked ass. I'm sure the new release will be a treat.

Right on JR. Just spun Gob Iron yesterday. I'm psyched to see what Jay has in store this time.

Did Ryan Adams album get delayed? Original release date was 11/4, but I find nothing on it since a few articles back in August

Exactly right. There might have only been a dozen or so perfect records in the Rock era and Trace is one of them.Iowan wrote:That's for the blasphemy thread right there.Zip City wrote:Even Trace hasn't held up well over time (IMO). About half classic, half pretty good.

Re: 2017 Album Releases
I adore Trace, but I wouldn't call it perfect or even say it ranks in the top 50 best albums of the rock era.

Re: 2017 Album Releases
My pleasure. As I'm sure many here are aware, Baird has been out there creating music of note (especially in recent years) that rarely gets noticed. I saw him and Homemade Sin do a show at the Berkeley in Raleigh a few years ago that rivals most any Truckers show I've ever seen. They brought it for roughly 3 hours with the last portion of the set being covers that were just fun for them to play and for us to hear.Cole Younger wrote:Like it.
