Copper Canteen.
Holy fuck, is that song so many people I know.

Re: James McMurtry Thread
there’s not a rocker among the album’s 12 tracks, which heavily favor acoustic guitars and are inflected with banjo, piano and other rootsy instrumentation..
That's good news. Never been as convinced by JM in "Telecaster barnstormer" mode (though the man can sure as fuck play). Man, "South Dakota" is excellent. Hope they do a pre-order sorta deal with a deluxe something or other.

Really? To my ears, the version of "Choctaw Bingo" on Live in Aught Three is one of the greatest "Telecaster barnstormer mode" songs ever committed to tape. I like my McMurtry in both forms & fashion.

I agree on "Choctaw Bingo".

I love Ray Wylie Hubbard but have never cared a whole lot for his version of "Choctaw Bingo". It's not bad but McMurtry brings something to it that no one else can.

The RWH version was the first version I ever heard. I enjoy it, especially live, but McMurtry has a snarl when he plays it that I don't think anyone else is capable of.
Re: James McMurtry Thread
Ah, I love "Choctaw Bingo," and many other JM rockers. Don't mind me, I'm the guy who was yelling at Dylan at Newport. Ha! I just think there are precious few writers creating songs as sharp, thoughtful and evocative as McMurtry, so when it comes to the point in the set where he asks everybody to get up and dance, it's just not what I'm really looking for from him. I still enjoy that side of him, just not as much.
Re: James McMurtry Thread
I just caught the "warsh" in Copper Canteen and "droughth" in South Dakota. Fucking nailing the Upper Midwest on this one.

Indeed, the new songs sound excellent....the final 8 minutes....a blistering version of Too Long in the Wasteland blew me away, better than the Aught Three recording? Maybe, maybe not, but its a large version...

My Complicated Game review went up today:

I know it's only February and all, but this is gonna be pretty tough to beat for AOY.

God, I want to hear this fucking album. Less than two weeks...
Re: James McMurtry Thread
I'm really not feeling the production on "How'm I Gonna Find You Now." Lyrics are good, as expected, but what's with the handclaps, fuzz bass, and synthesized beats? It also sounds ultra compressed and just...weird. I'm alone here?

I think I read somewhere that the single mix is different than the album mix. Supposedly the album mix is more...organic(?) sounding. Did I dream this?

Every time this thread refreshes, I keep thinking there's going to be a link to a CG stream.
Damn you, Duke Silver. You smooth, soulful bastard.

Beebs, when I saw this thread bumped, and your name at the end of it, I was thinking you might make the list.

Probably the first album this year I've sunk my teeth into, but if it gets topped, I'll be a very happy (and very surprised) man.

As first lines go, that's pretty much of a grabber!!! I think I'm gonna like this one.

Re: James McMurtry Thread
Not exactly an upbeat record. Sounds to me it's about places more than people. I think this is going to be primarily for early-morning listening.
