Forgotten Gems

Post by Smitty »

What's some great but largely unknown songs, by either a popular or relatively obscure artist?

Here's a couple to start with:

Bruce Springsteen - If I Was the Priest

Love as Laughter - Miss Direction

bonus: Neal Casal covering "Miss Direction"
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

I originally misused this thread and realized it. Here is a Petty song that I like but never hear... ever.

I've been in a Hoyt Axton rabbit hole for almost three weeks. Steppenwolf covered this tune but Hoyt's version slays me. You won't find a better drug song.

I would seriously love to hear the Truckers jam this one out. Cooley doing some funky ass guitar work and Jay on the keys....

And recorded in Muscle Shoals. I love Bob seger.

Here's a Seger I love that Rockpile covered way back when...a rock song that mentions Nebraska which is rare.

The live version Tom does of this song on the High Grass Dogs dvd is stunning.

Here's a Petty that is pretty old and may not have ever have seen the light of day if not for Duck Dunn and steve Cropper from Booker T and the MG's. Tom said the song was in a rut until Duck got a bass line going in the studio and Cropper kinda conducted Duck the rest of the way. Tom said duck was probably the greatest musician he has ever met btw...

I picked this up because Rundgren worked on it, and I'm sure glad I did:

Speaking of Tom Petty:

One of my absolutely favorite Neil Young songs:

And back to the Boss: a River outtake covered by Donna Summer:

Now it's dark.

Roger Miller- "Leavin's Not The Only Way To Go". Haggard and a couple others covered this but I don't think any version is well known. I don't think Miller wrote a better song.

Wasn't sure what thread this belonged in. I guess this one works.
The Skeletons "Waiting For My Gin To Hit Me".....absolutely great. The Skeletons, The Morells.....those Springfield, Missouri folks had this shit down pat.
