Tragically Hip - Sad news from The Hip camp

Post by Howlinwolf »

Sad news from one of Canada's greatest bands ever: The Tragically Hip. Frontman / singer Gord Downie has terminal cancer.

Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his band mates....

I was sad to see that. Leader of a great band. He will be missed when he passes.

Going out like the Living Bubba, tho.

This one is hitting hard. So much of my life's soundtrack is from Gord and this band.

Thinking of Gord Downie tonight and his brothers in arms as they take the first steps and play the first notes of this, their last waltz. A Living Bubba....courage, my word, indeed.

I hope Gordon gets some peace & happiness during this tour. Phenomenal band. Due to Seattle's proximity to Canada, we got several outstanding & memorable shows over the years.

There were gatherings across the country for Saturday night's final show. I was a local eatery which borders a small park in the small town near where I live - the owners raised a sail on the side of the restaurant and streamed the CBC broadcast of this show (which was commercial and commentary free - the CBC walked away from substantial advertising money just to bring it to the masses in its true form). The sound and a video were amazing. Maybe 500 people from all walks of life - all singing, dancing, hugging and weeping. I cannot think of anything else comparable. Beautifully intense outpourings of love both on and off stage.

You don't have to be a fan to respect the enormity of the occasion and how quintessentially Canadian those 3 hours were. I consider myself blessed.

I have a lot of family in Canada and they all worship the Hip.

I'm starting to get it. Gord Downie is the man.

I watched that last Hip show. It was the first time I ever saw them live. They have an undeniable amount of great songs, but they were never really my thing. That show blew me away and I can say it was the bravest, most pure and honest performance I have ever seen and I've probably seen a thousand rock shows. At times it was hard to watch, but I am so grateful that I got to see it. In a facebook, instagram, twitter, reality TV, world, Gord Downey showed us something we needed to see; what it looks like when someone lays themselves bare and exposes their true humanity and vulnerability, while maintaining their integrity. I have so much admiration and respect for Gord Downey right now, it hurts.

I spend a lot of time in my car listening to the CBC. I both live and work in the city, but my horse lives in the country. He's a competition horse, so he has to be in a program to maintain his strength and fitness and so do I, so I'm not up there flopping around, interfering with him while he tries to be good at his job.

So I'm basically a commuter, who spends a lot of time crying in her car. The CBC can be so deadly, whether they are broadcasting an environmental scientist, who snorkels in her spare time, talking about how all the coral around the Christmas Islands is now dead or they are interviewing a lady who lives on a lake that has just been contaminated by a huge amount of mining waste and she is describing how she just watched 2 otters slowly die in a panic, from poisoning. But probably the worst, most demoralizingly, sobby CBC moment in my car was when they read the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Residential Schools.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_ ... ool_system:

What the fuck Canada? I am so ashamed.

Gord Downey is all over this. During his last show, he called out to our Prime Minister, who was in attendance, to "make it right," and he's currently involved in this amazing project about a young boy who died fleeing a residential school. Gord Downey is killing me with his incredibleness these days. What an amazing person.

His facial expression is terrifying. He's basically the equine Chucky.

Nothing to add to that. As always PG, well said and heartfelt.
