Saw him 4x. First was on the Dirty Mind tour. I was at an after party about 20 years ago. Prince came on about 1:00am. Played until 5:00. Larry Graham was on bass. He put on a fucking guitar clinic. I'm telling ya Dean, the guy could stand toe to toe with Hendrix. Been waiting forever for his rock record. Hoping there is one in the vaults

Wow. .. and we ain't even in May yet. There's scores of musicians that die every year (naturally, duh) but holy shit at the giants that have passed so far this year. I regret that I never got to see him live.

Always said that he was the most unbelievably underrated guitarist going, sad/funny that among a list of things people know/remember about him, his guitar playing is fairly far down the list

I bow to you for seeing him & Larry Graham

Not the best recording, but we take what we can get, right? Larry Graham. Man. That's someone who can stand toe-to-toe with Prince there.

The thing that makes Prince going so shocking is that unlike Bowie and the Hag and Lemmie and Glenn Frey, he was not approaching or over 70, he had no history of hard living/abuse, and he hadn't been ill for a long time (until the flu scare last week). This is completely out of the purple, so to speak

Sadly, we're at a point where many stalwarts of the "classic rock" era are going to start dropping like flies.

But Prince was 57!
I can't imagine what it was like in the 70's when you had the leading rock stars of the day dying in their 20's.

Given that the age of the stalwarts recently dying is 65+, with of course the exception of The Purple Man, the bigger surprise to me is that so many of these musicians lived as long as they did. Especially Lemmy

As for Prince, I always thought he was a superhero and wasn't really human. Alas, as with so many things, I was wrong :(

OK. So I'm a pack rat. Saw the Dirty Mind tour and clipped this review from the Village Voice. Written by Pablo Guzman--a well known CBS TV reporter and lesser known founder of the Young Lords (sorta like the Puerto Rican Black Panthers back in the day)

All seven and we'll watch them fall
They stand in the way of love
And we will smoke them all
With an intellect and a savior-faire
No one in the whole universe
Will ever compare
I am yours now and you are mine
And together we'll love through all
Space and time, so don't cry
One day all seven will die
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

mission fuckin' statement

Hey, look me over
Tell me do you like what you see?
Hey, I ain't got no money
But honey, I'm rich on personality

Hey, check it all out
Baby, I know what it's all about
Before the night is through
You will see my point of view
Even if I have to scream and shout

Baby, I'm a star
Might not know it now
Baby, but I are, I'm a star
I don't want to stop, till I reach the top
Sing it, we all are a star

Hey, take a listen
Tell me do you like what you hear?
If it don't turn you on
Just say a word, I'm gone
Honey, I know ain't nothing wrong with your ears

Hey, check it all out
Better look now or it just might be too late
My lucks gonna change tonight
There's gotta be a better life
Take a picture sweetie, I ain't got time to waste

Oh, baby I'm a star
Might not know it now
Baby but I are, I'm a star
I don't want to stop, till I reach the top
Sing it, we all are a star

Everybody say, nothing come too easy
When you got it baby, nothing come too hard
You'll see what I'm all about
If I gotta scream and shout
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Might not know it now
Baby but I are, I'm a star
I don't want to stop, till I reach the top
Sing it, star

Baby, baby, baby
Oh, baby, I'm a star
Baby, baby, baby
Somebody
We all are a star, yeah

(Baby I'm a star, we all are a star, yeah)
(We all are a star)
We all are a star, yeah, doctor
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby
We all are a star

OK, I'm gonna slow my roll, but..... for a long time I have thought that in, I am pretty sure, Grand Canyon Cooley mimics a certain repetitive guitar part from Purple Rain. On the album version of Purple Rain it starts around 4:45 and Prince plays it several times during the extended coda. I may have posted about this before but doubt it

Prince was someone who seemed to be universally liked and respected and he cut across pretty much every demographic. Given how talented and influential he was, I didn't listen to him, follow him, or know his catalogue nearly enough.

I also wonder what caused his death. I hope it wasn't drug related but he was young and the reports I've heard about his last few weeks leave me wondering.

Anyway, RIP Prince.

So until just this moment I never knew that the Nazis identified Jehovah's Witnesses with a purple triangle in concentration camps. It is well known that Prince was Jehovah's Witness. Wonder if that was an inspiration for the purple???

ETA: OK, good theory but likely offbase: he was into the purple long before he became a Witness. Sounded good but alas...

Yeah, I'm nowhere near a really big Prince fan compared to some of y'all (although when I was younger I was obsessed with him for awhile), but I've always dug the shit out of him and kind of taken his music for granted.

I think I mentioned in my Gary Stewart AOTW thread that "Purple Rain" was a staple in the bars I for all intents and purposes grew up in. I've got a ton of memories tied up in that song. I'm not saying it's his best or anything, but I when I heard earlier today I put it on and it slaughtered me.

I didn't shed a tear when Merle died although I listened to him 10x more than Prince. I felt gutted... but I literally haven't been able to listen to a whole Prince song today without my throat lumping up. A coworker today couldn't understand it and I couldn't explain why when certain musicians (who I've never met) die it affects me more than when some people I actually know die.

Mine too. One of the amazing things about Prince was that he was that as well as the funk workouts he could turn out the most beautiful pop ballads.

I got to see him once. Strangely all my stories about not seeing him are tied to the Truckers. I had tickets to see him the day after I got back from the Truckers last European tour. I managed to come back with the euro tour death flu and instead of seeing him spent the day in bed dying - my missus took my step daughter to the show so at least they both got to see him. The second time I didn't get to see Prince was when I flew out to Chicago to we the a truckers last November. He'd announced a show in Birmingham and I spent an hour when I was in Dublin airport trying to get on the website to but tickets. The tickets actually never went on sale because of the Paris terror attacks.
