The Cure

Post by chuckrh »

Any other fans out there? I just scored a ticket to see them on 5/19 in Vegas & am quite excited. This is my bucket list band. I've been waiting at least 25 years. I've actually had tickets before & couldn't go. It wasn't looking good this tour either, as they are playing the Sasquatch festival rather than Seattle. Expensive & a long drive with kind of a weak line up spread over 4 days. & you can't buy single day tickets. So I bit the bullet & got a nice reserved seat from a broker. Good venue (the Chelsea @ the Cosmopolitan) & won't have to worry about shortened festival set or curfew. Reeves Gabrels is now in the band & one of my favorite guitar players. Should be an excellent trip & show! Cool thing about Vegas is I was able to work the system & get 3 nights @ Mandalay Bay for basically nothing. Makes the decision to take the trip easy.

I've seen them once, back in 1990 at Glastonbury and it was great. Seriously contemplating going to see them in Manchester in November.

I liked them fine when they were hot in the mid-late 80's, was able to explore their music more when I owned some record stores in the early nineties and then got to see them about 15 years ago when I was dating a woman who was an enormous fan. I think they're a bit underrated to be honest. They made some good records. I forget about them though and should dig some out soon.

Fantastic group up till about 1985. Saw them in Edinburgh in 1981 touring the album Faith, great show. Then they decided that stadium rock/anthemic rock/overlong dirges were the way to go, and like Robert Smith the music become bloated.

The song Friday I'm In Love from 1992 is brilliant though. Singles were always this bands major strength, any Cure compilation will be a strong collection of songs.

Disintegration came out in '89.... there's a typo on 1985.

Actually I originally had 1984 in mind as my cut off, but Head in The Door from 1985 is still pretty good.

"Just like Heaven" and "FIIL" are perfect pop songs, IMO.

yeah, some definite good ones.

i've seen the Cure three times... fisrt on the Kiss Me tour, then on Disintegration, and then in 2008 or so. the Disintegration tour still ranks as top 20 shows i've seen by anyone.... it was held in an outside pavilion with a hurricane on the way... the warm, unsettled, windy atmosphere was a perfect match.

That's a great song that plays brilliantly against type.

I just watched the Trilogy concert blu-ray for the 1st time in quite awhile. Brilliant. I know the band isn't everyone's cup of tea but they definitely have their own unique sound. The output has been consistently strong over the years, too. I'm expecting quite a show. Whilst I wish I could've seen them with Porl Thompson on guitar, I am more than happy to see them with Reeves Gabrels in that slot. Reeves blew me away more than once when he played with Bowie.

Hollywood Bowl for my first ever Cure concert in May, with my younger son. Outside of Led Zeppelin, just missed em before Bonham died, The Cure is my most favorite band that I have never seen live. After the show I fly to Red Rocks for 2 MMJ shows with my older son. One hell of a week.

They had been a bucket list band for me for a very long time before I was fortunate to catch their set at Riot Fest Chicago in 2014. It was an incredible day of music having seen The Whigs, The Hold Steady,Andrew WK, Lucero, Dropkick Murphy's, Patti Smith, Social Distortion, and concluded with a 2 and a half hour set by The Cure to conclude a fantastic Sunday of music. Lots of fantastic other acts right? I love every one those are other acts (except Andrew WK) None even came close to The Cure's sound quality, professionalism, and overall performance. They were absolutely amazing. I never picked up on how tight their rhythm section was until I saw them live. The intricacies of every guitar or key note was so on point. And although Robert Smith looked like he had subscribed to my same work out plan for some years, his voice was still so incredibly good.
They tour the US so infrequently that I vowed from that moment on that I would never miss one of their Chicago stops....ever. I am fortunate enough to be seeing them in a relatively small room in Chicago, at UIC Pavillion in June.

And I give all of this praise as a "fan" that only owns Disintegration, Wish, and their greatest hits collection which was put out in the 90's. I am glad that you made the post, because I've been meaning to ask some of the more knowledgeable Cure fans. What album(s) should I order next?

Yup.

The Cure made some great pop rock, but I've never been that interested in them beyond the hits, I guess.

Tip for night shift workers. Need some great "white noise" for sleeping during the day? Disintegration is so hypnotic you can get deep sleep and enjoy it at the same time. My wife used to put it on repeat when working nights, especially in the summer when the kids were home.

I've been on a binge lately getting ready for the show. I've gone back & I really like most of the records Porl Thompson was involved with. We don't need to talk about "Disintegration". The records around that are stellar though. "Head On the Door", "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" & "Wish" are all high on my rotation right now. "Wish" seems to be unfairly maligned in some circles. I find that it is a really good mix of the epic & the pop. Personally, I prefer live stuff in general & there is plenty of good legit & bootleg stuff floating around out there. "Show" & "Paris" are particularily good. I'm really looking forward to seeing Reeves Gabrels play with them. I think there is finally some studio stuff with him coming out but the shows I've listened to with him are great. A top of list guitar player for me. I'm really excited about finally seeing the band. I've got quite a streak of shows coming up (Who, Bruce, Iggy & the Cure) & I'm most excited about the Cure & Iggy. Both of those shows are in 3000 seat venues & I've got great seats for both.

Just got back from seeing the band in Vegas. They were fantastic! Opened with the first 3 songs from Disintegration (& did 3 more from that album in the show). They played over 30 songs, about 3 hours. Robert Smith was very engaged & Reeves Gabrels is a fantastic guitar player. They are changing the sets radically every night & doing material (b-sides included) that hasn't been played live since the 1980's. If you get the chance, go!

A few months ago the music blog, Slicing Up Eyeballs, did a vote for your favorite Cure song. You can see the results here.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the Top 40 based on the voting. Unfortunately, the singles for "Let's Go to Bed" and "Killing an Arab" aren't on Spotify. I went with the live versions instead.

Seeing an extended performance of "A Forest" live is an experience to behold. Such an underrated band. They are still incredible live.

You should check out the Cure fan form. Lot of nice folks on there. After 50 posts, some things happen that I think you would like a real lot! ;)
