Thirteen is probably in my top 10 favorite songs EVER.

Chris Bell's I am the cosmos will also change your life.

I'm weird with Big Star. Some of their songs totally absolutely 100% live up to the hype and just blow you away, but it seems like half the songs on any of their albums just don't do a lot for me. Nowhere near changing my life, although September Gurls might have at the right point in time.

I got that from emusic on your recommendation (I think, might have been someone elses).

only given it a couple of spins so far. Third one's the charm, right?
I've never taken a pissbreak during a DBT show but if I had it would have been during Dancing Ricky.

If they didn't have you at "girlfriend what are you doing?" or at least "years ago my heart was set to live" I'm not sure the third time's gonna help, but here's hoping...

Well, only five artists have ever changed my life. Two bands, two writers and one writer/rock and roll musician. But life is a whole lot more enjoyable with Big Star.

Got it. Kind of reminds me of (a better) Bay City Rollers. Not something I would listen to every day, but probably better for the office workplace environment than Iron Maiden (LOL). There were several articles on Chilton's Tuscaloosa connection recently, by Will Kimbrough and (I think) Jason Isbell (??) although he would have been in grade school then, so that is probably wrong. I know Kimbrough wrote a good one.

Methinks Joelle will not be pleased.

Seriously though, Big Star were the shit. For real. My holy grail was finding their albums in the late eighties when they were next to impossible to find. I remember going nuts when I found Radio City. All started when I hear The Replacements song Alex Chilton.

Man, I need stronger coffee. I was confusing my charismatic and influential 3DD ladies.

Anyway, I took your collective advice and DLd the album from Amazon. On 2nd consecutive listen. Good all around stuff, not life changing yet, but right now I'm okay with status quo/

The thing I don't understand is that I'd never heard of Big Star until hanging here. I listened to all the same 70s/80s/90s stuff as most everyone else around these parts but zip nada zilch when it comes to Big Star. Weird. But better late than never!

OK now I get it. Unbelievably (to me), I had not made the connection that Alex Chilton was the 16 year old Wonder Voice, of one of the favorite bands of my youth, the Box Tops. I sorta wondered whatever happened to that kid, whose voice belied his tender age. I thought maybe he had faded into One-Hit Wonderland (even though the Box Tops had about 5 hits).
The Letter was a mega smash, and Cry Like a Baby (co-written it turns out, by none other than Spooner Oldham. [oh, the inter-connectivity of everything])was a personal favorite for quite awhile.

My favorite song by the Box Tops was this one. I never understood the lyrics then (I was 12), and I still don't (I'm 53). It was an anthem of I know not what; but it always made me feel good. Perhaps it was a glimpse of what Chilton would later produce.

Thanks joelle and Clams and all of you 3DDers, who have 'turned' me on to this band, that I should've known of all along. And I fancy myself a connoisseur. It's hard for me to believe that I may have only scratched the surface of great music; but that is probably true. Oh, and speakin' of joelle, long time no post. I miss your combination of minimalistic bluntness and flowery prose. Please rejoin the discussion.

#1 Record is a GREAT album. And that's my least favorite. Oddly, I heard Sister Lovers first and worked backwards. Everyone I hung around with in high school liked cool stuff but one guy in our circle in particular was always ahead of the curve. This was mid-eighties in North Dakota, Everybody still has mostly cassette and vinyl. I remember him coming over one day from the record store. He had some record by a band that he said his sister saw at college somewhere in Rhode Island that he bought for that reason alone. That was the Pixies' Surfer Rosa. Then he had a used copy of the Bad Brains self titled. You know, the yellow cassette. And then he pulled out Sister Lovers. It was a German import and it definitely had less songs than the re-issue and they were in a different order. totally killed me right away. Stroke It Noel is a song that has always stuck with me. Lotta despair on that album.

You're having a pretty awesome day when you hear three albums that great for the first time.
