I'm goin' down to the Greyhound Station, gonna get a ticket to ride
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids and sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around me 'bout two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Tryin' to hide my sorrow from the people I meet
and get along with it all
Go down where the people say "y'all"
Sing a song with a friend
Change the shape that I'm in,
And get back in the game,
And start playin' again
I'd like to stay but I might have to go to start over again
Might go back down to Texas, might go to somewhere that I've never been
And get up in the mornin' and go out at night
and I won't have to go home
Get used to bein' alone
Change the words to this song
Start singin' again
I'm tired of runnin' 'round lookin' for answers to questions that I already know
I could build me a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go
Count the days and the nights that it takes to get back in the saddle again
Feed the pigeons some clay
Turn the night into day
Start talkin' again, when I know what to say
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound Station, gonna get a ticket to ride
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids and sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around me 'bout two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat

And get along with it all

Statue of Jesus--- Gear Daddies

I’m sitting downtown
Crying ‘neath a statue of Jesus
Both of us lonely and cold
I hope no one can see us
I know I’m drunk, yeah, but I don’t think that he’d care
Surely he must understand these crosses that I bear
So I’m sitting downtown
Crying ‘neath a statue of Jesus

Sometime I think she’s right
I ain’t worth a shit
A wife and kids to feed
And here I sit
I swear to God I try, but I just don’t think I fit
Daddy always said everything I touched, it turned to shit
So I’m sitting downtown
Crying ‘neath a statue of Jesus

I did thirty days hard
For stealing cigarettes
How’s a man supposed to tell
His children that
I swear to God I try, but I just don’t think I fit
Daddy always said everything I touched, it turned to shit
So I’m sitting downtown crying ‘neath a statue of Jesus
I’m sitting downtown
Crying ‘neath a statue of Jesus
Looks like a bunch of little whiny fucksticks to me

I got you where you belong
Here in my heart, right by my side
Honey, you're getting me by
Yeah, you're keeping me alive

I got a job, I work hard
These days the money don't go very far
It's hard enough keeping gas in the car

But sometimes we ride around

Mama had a heart like the ocean
Biggest thing I'd ever seen
She could love all day like her blood was made of gasoline
She never had an enemy never drove a car
Never had a penny to her name
And if she had enough of something then she'd give the rest away

Yeah but people they die; they just disappear
Or maybe they just need to get the hell outta here

Daddy was as mean as a wild dog
Sharp as the edge of a blade
He could con a flood into thinking that he needed rain
He was never that happy or satisfied
Never feel like he'd been made
And he let Mama know it with a hand right across the face

Yeah but people they die; they just disappear
Or maybe they just need to get the hell outta here

Mama had a heart like the ocean
Biggest thing I'd ever seen
And she loved me all day like her blood was made of gasoline
Daddy never knew just what he had cuz he's too busy being mean
Now I don't have a mama and he don't have noone to beat

Yeah cuz people they die; they just disappear
Or maybe they just need to get the hell outta here

Uncle Kracker-Smile
It a simple happy song about feeling good about another person

You're better then the best
I'm lucky just to linger in your light
Cooler than the flip side
Of my pillow, that's right

Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where
You send me, lets me know that it's okay
Yeah, it's okay
And the moments where my good times start to fade

You make me smile like the sun, fall out of bed
Sing like bird, dizzy in my head
Spin like a record, crazy on a Sunday night

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile

Even when you're gone,
Somehow you come along just like
A flower pokin' through the sidewalk crack
And just like that
You steal away the rain, and just like that

You make me smile like the sun, fall out of bed
Sing like bird, dizzy in my head
Spin like a record, crazy on a Sunday night

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile

Don't know how I lived without you
'Cause every time that I get around you
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild

You make me smile like the sun, fall out of bed
Sing like bird, dizzy in my head
Spin like a record, crazy on a Sunday night

You make me dance like a fool, forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
(Oh, you make me smile)
Oh, you make me smile
(Oh, you make me smile)
Oh, you make me smile

A 3fer for the little ones:

Kid - The Pretenders

Kid
What changed your mood?
You got all sad
So I feel sad too
I think I know
some things
you never outgrow

You think it's wrong
I can tell you do
How can I explain
When you don't want me to?

Kid
My only kid
You look so small
You've gone so quiet
I know you know
What I'm about
I won't deny it

But you forget
You don't understand
You've turned your head
You've dropped my hand

All my sorrows
All my blues
All my sorrows

Shut the light
Go away
Full of grace
You cover your face

Kid
Precious kid
Your eyes are blue
But you won't cry I know
Angry tears
Are too dear
You won't let them go

The Only Child - Jackson Browne

Boy of mine
As your fortune comes to carry you down the line
And you watch while the changes unfold
And you sort among the stories you'll be told
If some pieces of the picture are hard to find
And the answers to your questions are hard to hold

Take good care of your mother
When you're making up your mind
Should one thing or another take you from behind
Though the world may make you hard and wild
And determine how your life is styled
When you've come to feel that you're the only child
Take good care of your brother

Let the disappointments pass
Let the laughter fill your glass
Let your illusions last until they shatter
Whatever you might hope to find
Among the thoughts that crowd your mind
There won't be many that ever really matter

But take good care of your mother
And remember to be kind
When the pain of another will serve you to remind
That there are those who feel themselves exiled
On whom the fortune never smiled
And upon whose lives the heartache has been piled
They're just looking for another
Lonely child

And when you've found another soul
Who sees into your own
Take good care of each other

House at Pooh Corner - Kenny Loggins
(Loggins & Messina, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Indigo Girls)

Christopher Robin and I walked along
Under branches lit up by the moon
Posing our questions to Owl and Eeyore
As our days disappeared all too soon
But I've wandered much further today than I should
And I can't seem to find my way back to the wood

So help me if you can, I've got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one
You'd be surprised, there's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh

Winnie the Pooh doesn't know what to do
Got a honey jar stuck on his nose
He came to me asking help and advice
And from here no one knows where he goes
So I sent him to ask of the owl if he's there
How to loosen the jar from the nose of a bear

So help me if you can, I've got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one
You'd be surprised, there's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh

It's hard to explain how a few precious things
Seem to follow throughout all our lives
After all's said and done I was watching my son
Sleeping there with my bear by his side
So I tucked him in, kissed him
And as I was going
I swear that old bear whispered
Boy, welcome home!

Believe me if you can, I've got to get
Back to the house at Pooh Corner by one
What do you know, there's so much to be done
Count all the bees in the hive
Chase all the clouds from the sky
Back to the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh
Back to the ways of Christopher Robin and Pooh
Back to the ways of Pooh
A thousand clusterfucks will not kill my tiny light

You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair,
Ruby are you contemplating going out somewhere?
The shadows on the wall tell me the sun is going down,
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town.

It wasn't me that started that old crazy Asian war,
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore,
And yes, it's true that I'm not the man I used to be,
Oh Ruby, I still need some company.

It's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed,
And the wants and needs of a woman your age really I realize,
But it won't be long, I've heard them say, until I'm not around,
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town.

She's leaving now cause I just heard the slamming of the door,
The way I know I heard its slams one hundred times before,
And if I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground,
Oh Ruby, don't take your love to town.

Oh Ruby, for God's sake, turn around

I see this more as, woman left alone to fend for herself, but yet she is owned by another man. ie. "Lying Eyes" by the Eagles.

Sam Stone came home,
To his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knee.
But the morphine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Mmm....

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he played his last request
While the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on the G. I. Bill
For a flag draped casket on a local heroes' hill.

I can relate to the monkey on your back and the destruction that ensues parts. I saw him play this at Chastain a few years ago. I couldn't stop the tears.
Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold...

Or maybe a creepy old guy and a teenage girl ("... I got a bad desire...")

I always liked this song and never understood why it's always been largely scorned by hard core Bruce fans.

"When the Angels Sing"- Social Distortion

At last we meet again, dear God
Hear the angels sing
The funerals are nicer when we know you're there
When the angels sing
Sometimes I try so hard to understand
The things you do
I like to question you
When it all comes down
Hear the angels sing

Stand up strong
Feel the pain
When the angels sing
Love and death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

The prisoners pray when they're on to death row
When the angels sing
The junky cries for love but it's all run out
When the angels sing
The sins of the world
And it's cold on the streets
And you're all alone
And the tears
They start to fall
When it all comes down
Hear the angels sing

Stand up strong
Feel the pain
When the angels sing
Love and death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

Little by little
Day by day
I watch the children play
Cause life and death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

When the angel of death comes to looking for me
Hear the angels sing
I hope I was everything I was supposed to be
When the angels sing
There's gotta be a heaven
Cause I've already done
My time in hell

And a little baby's born when it all comes down
Hear the angels sing

Stand up strong
Feel the pain
When the angels sing
Love and death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

Little by little
Day by day
I watch the children play
Cause life and death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing
Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold...

Memories and drinks don't mix too well.
Jukebox records don't play those wedding bells.
Lookin' at the world through the bottom of a glass,
All I see is a man who's fading fast.
Tonight I need that woman again.
What I'd give for my baby to just walk in.
Sit down beside me and say: "It's alright.
"Take me home and make sweet love to me tonight."

But here I am again, mixin' misery and gin.
Sittin' with all my friends and talkin' to myself.
I look like I'm havin' a good time but any fool can tell,
That this Honky Tonk Heaven really makes ya' feel like hell.

I light a lonely woman's cigarette,
We both start talkin' 'bout what we want to forget.
Her life story and mine are the same.
We both lost someone and only have ourselves to blame.

But here I am again, mixin' misery and gin.
Sittin' with all my friends and talkin' to myself.
I look like I'm havin' a good time but any fool can tell,
That this Honky Tonk Heaven really makes ya' feel like hell

I Will Not Go Hungry- Todd Snider

I will not walk out on your highway
I will not wonder where I'll sleep
I know I will not go hungry
The day that Jesus comes for me

Down on that street
You see me standing
Down on my luck
So all alone
Someday I won't care
Even if it's raining
That day when Jesus calls me home

I ain't rich
But I'm no poor man
I may be down
But I won't die
There ain't no room for me in this land
But I've got mansions in the sky

I will not walk out on your highway
I will not wonder where I'll sleep
And I know I will not go hungry
The day that Jesus comes for me

Come for me
Come for me
Jesus come for me
Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold...

This gets me every time I hear it.

Golden rod and the 4-H stone
The things I brought you
When I found out you had cancer of the bone

Your father cried on the telephone
And he drove his car to the Navy yard
Just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning through the window shade
When the light pressed up against your shoulder blade
I could see what you were reading

Oh the glory that the lord has made
And the complications you could do without
When I kissed you on the mouth

Tuesday night at the bible study
We lift our hands and pray over your body
But nothing ever happens

I remember at Michael's house
In the living room when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse

In the morning at the top of the stairs
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared

Oh the glory when you ran outside
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you

Sunday night when I cleaned the house
I find the card where you wrote it out
With the pictures of your mother

On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

Oh the glory that the lord has made
And the complications when I see his face
In the morning in the window

Oh the glory when he took our place
But he took my shoulders and he shook my face
And he takes and he takes and he takes

ngb - I love this song, and this one too.

High school seemed like such a blur
I didn't have much interest in sports or school elections
And in class I dreamed all day
About a rock 'n' roll weekend
And the girl in the front of the room
So close yet so far
Y'know she never seemed to notice
That this silly school-boy crush wasn't just pretend

Life goes by so fast
You only want to do what you think is right
Close your eyes and then it's past;
(it's the) story of my life

And I went down to my old neighborhood
The faces have all changed, there's no one left to talk to
And the pool hall I loved as a kid is now a seven eleven

I went downtown to look for a job
I had no training, no experience to speak of
I looked at the holes in my jeans and turned and headed back

Life goes by so fast
You only want to do what you think is right
Close your eyes and then it's past;
(it's the) story of my life

Good times come and good times go
I only wish the good times would last a little longer
I think about the good times we had and why they had to end

So I sit at the edge of my bed
I strum my guitar and I sing an outlaw love song
Wonderin' bout what you're doin' now and when you're comin' back

Life goes by so fast
You only want to do what you think is right
Close your eyes and then it's past;
(it's the) story of my life

The Story of My Life - Social Distortion
A thousand clusterfucks will not kill my tiny light

Long black limousine
Shiniest car I've ever seen
The back seat is nice and clean
She rides as quiet as a dream
Someone dug a hole six long feet in the ground
I said goodbye to you and I threw my roses down
Ain't nothing left at all in the end of being proud
With me riding in this car, and you flying through the clouds

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun set like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long ride home

One day I took your tiny hand
Put your finger in the wedding band
Your daddy gave a piece of land
We laid ourselves the best of plans
Forty years go by with someone laying in your bed
Forty years of things you say you wish you'd never said
How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead
I wonder as I stare up at the sky turning red

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun set like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long ride home

Headlights staring at the driveway
The house is dark as it can be
I go inside and all is silent
It seems as empty as the inside of me

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun set like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long, on the long
Oh the long, on the long
On the long ride home

Shining Mister Lincoln's Shoes, Wayne Kramer/Don Was

HE'S A TEMPORARY CONTRACT MAN
SINCE THE UNION LOST ITS CLOUT
GOT NO MEDS OR BENEFITS
HE'S LIVING HAND TO MOUTH

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MONUMENT
HE FINALLY PAID HIS DUES
DYING OF A HEART ATTACK
WHILE SHINING MR. LINCOLNS SHOES

THERE'S THEM THAT GOT THE MONEY
AND THEN THERE'S THEM THAT AIN'T
THERES THEM THAT'S SMELLING ROSES
THERE'S THEM THAT'S HUFFING PAINT

HONEST ABE HE NEVER BLINKED
AS HIS SERVANT HIT THE GROUND
ANOTHER SOLDIER SACRIFICED
ANOTHER GOOD MAN DOWN

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MONUMENT
WITH THOSE MOP-N-BUCKET BLUES.
HIS SOUL SANG SWEET SURRENDER
WHILE SHINING MR. LINCOLN'S SHOES.
The sooner we put those assholes in the grave&piss on the dirt above it, the better off we'll be

That's what I was when I first left home
I took every secret that I'd ever known
And headed for the wall
Like a wrecking ball

Started down on the road to sin
Playin' bass under a pseudonym
The days were rough and it's all quite dim
But my mind cuts through it all
Like a wrecking ball

Oh, just a little deadhead
Who is watching, who is watching?
I's just a little deadhead

I won a dollar on a scholarship
Well, I got tired and let my average slip
Then I's a farmer in the pogonip
Where the weed that I recall
Was like a wrecking ball

I met a lovesick daughter of the San Joaquin
She showed me colors I'd never seen
Drank the bottom out of my canteen
Then left me in the fall
Like a wrecking ball

Standin' there, in the morning mist
A Jack and Coke at the end of my wrist
Yes, I remember when first we kissed
Though it was nothing at all
Like a wrecking ball

Hey boys, just a little deadhead
Who's watching, who's watching?
I's just a little deadhead

With too much trouble for me to shake
Oh, the weather and the blindin' ache
Was ridin' high until the '89 quake
Hit the Santa Cruz garden mall
Like a wrecking ball
ain't no static on the gospel radio

I threw your keys in the water, I looked back,
They'd frozen halfway down in the ice.
They froze up so quickly, the keys and their owners,
Even after the anger, it all turned silent, and
The everyday turned solitary,
So we came to February.

First we forgot where we'd planted those bulbs last year,
Then we forgot that we'd planted at all,
Then we forgot what plants are altogether,
and I blamed you for my freezing and forgetting and
The nights were long and cold and scary,
Can we live through February?

You know I think Christmas was a long red glare,
Shot up like a warning, we gave presents without cards,
And then the snow,
And then the snow came, we were always out shoveling,
And we'd drop to sleep exhausted,
Then we'd wake up, and its snowing.

And February was so long that it lasted into March
And found us walking a path alone together.
You stopped and pointed and you said, "That's a crocus,"
And I said, "What's a crocus?" and you said, "Its a flower,"
I tried to remember, but I said, "What's a flower?"
You said, "I still love you."

The leaves were turning as we drove to the hardware store,
My new lover made me keys to the house,
And when we got home, well we just started chopping wood,
Because you never know how next year will be,
And we'll gather all our arms can carry,
I have lost to February.

Alas he was the highwayman
The one that comes and goes
And only the highway-woman
Keeps up with the likes of those
And she in all her magic
With hands as quick as light
Took him to be a challenge
And went into the night

And he in all his glory
Was far ahead of her
But she was never sorry
For wishes that would burn
Enter competition
She chases beneath the moon
Her horse is like a dragonfly
She is just a fool

And she wonders is this real
Or does she just want to be Queen
And he fights the way he feels
Is this the end of the dream

And then he sees her coming
Heartbeats on the wind
Considers slowing down
But then...he could never win
And she...out in the distance
Sees him against the sky
A pale and violent rider
A dream begun in wine

And she wonders is this real
Or does she just want to be Queen
And he fights the way he feels
Is this the end of the dream

A dream as the thunder wakes her
And her highwayman disappears
on a life already lived before
In eyes welled with tears

Today and still today they ride
Will they ever win
He the glory...
She the love...
Still they try again
He the glory...
She the love...
Still they try again
He the glory...
She the love...
And still they...try...again
