Favorite Song/Lyrics That GET You

Post by Smitty »

I'm humming as I walk this house and do my daily chores
When I put the broom away I see the dress that Alice wore
It's hanging in the closet sadly sagging without form
Empty dress there in the closet held a body soft and warm
Shoes and dress that Alice wore

It's the dress she wore the night she caught me lying there beside
Some strange woman meaning nothing just some bones and hair and hide
I could not explain it to her and I cannot to this day
Now I stand here staring at the dress she wore to go away
Shoes and dress that Alice wore

And the shoes are red and shiny and they're modest in the heel
And the dress a bad investment and the color could be teal
She went screaming from the room where I lay blinking in the nude
With the woman there beside me saying ain't this woman rude
Shoes and dress that Alice wore

So I asked the undertaker in a private kind of way
Before you close the casket when our friends have gone away
If it's not too strange to reason I would make one last request
Since it all goes in the ground I'd like to have the shoes and dress
Shoes and dress that Alice wore

So I'm humming as I walk this house...

I've held it all inward, Lord knows I've tried
But its an awful awakening in a country boy's life
To look at the mirror in total surprise
At the hair on my shoulders and the age in my eyes

Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
Amanda, light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife

It's a measure of people who don't understand
The pleasures of life in a hillbilly band
I got my first guitar when I was fourteen
I've finally made forty and I'm still wearing jeans

Amanda, Light of my life
Fate should have made you a gentleman's wife
I have nowhere else to go. There is no demand in the priesthood for elderly drug addicts

Posted a few verses back on 9B. Easily one of my favorite songs of all time.

I took a night shift another nickel on the dime
Try to play it straight and make it different this time
Still waiting to meet the next ex-wife
It's either watching these gauges for Monsanto
Or a bar-back job for the casino
The Army won't want me after what this body's been through

Would you take me back North Carolina?
Would you take me back Arkansas?
Blissful days still there to remember
Methamphetamine was the final straw

I had a killer job in a backup band
Playin' guitar in Branson
Two shows a night brought the money to chase down sin
Now it's another weekend and I'm lonely at home
Late night TV evangelist drone
I'm healthy now but I really don't know if I'll ever be free

Would you take me back North Carolina?
Would you take me back Arkansas?
Blissful days still there to remember
Methamphetamine was the final straw

When, When We Were Young
We Had No History
So Nothing To Lose
Meant We Could Choose
Choose What We Wanted Then
Without Any Fear
Or Thought Of Revenge
But Then You Grew Old
And I Lost My Ambition
So I Gained An Addiction
To Drink And Depression
(They Are Mine
My Only True Friends
And I'll Keep Them With Me
Until The Very End)
I'd Choose Not To Remember
But I Miss Your Arrogance
And I Need Your Intelligence
And Your Hate For Authority
But Now You're Gone
I Read It Today
They Found You In Spain
Face Down In The Street
With A Bottle In Your Hand
And A Wild Smile On Your Face
And A Knife In Your Back
You Died In A Foreign Land
And They Found My Letter
Rolled Up In Your Pocket
Where I Said I'd Kill Myself
If She Left Me Again
So Now She's Gone
And You're Both In My Mind
I've Got One Thing To Say
Before I Am Drunk Again:
God Damn The Sun
God Damn The Sun
God Damn Anyone
That Says A Kind Word
God Damn The Sun
God Damn The Sun
God Damn The Light It Shines
And This World It Shows
God Damn The Sun

My father died a year ago today.
The rooster started crowing when they carried Dad away.
There beside my mother, in the living room, I stood,
With my brothers and my sisters, knowing Dad was gone for good.

Well, I stayed at home just long enough,
To lay him in the ground and then I,
Caught a plane to do a show up north in Detroit town.
Because I'm older now and I've got no time to cry.

I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see,
The pieces of my heart that have been ripped away from me.
And if the feeling starts to coming, I've learned to stop 'em fast.
`Cause I don't know, if I let 'em go, they might not wanna pass.
And there's just so many people trying to get me on the phone.
And there's bills to pay, and songs to play,
And a house to make a home.
I guess I'm older now and I've got no time to cry.

I can still remember when I was a girl.
But so many things have changed so much here in my world.
I remember sitting on the front yard when an ambulance went by,
And just listening to those sirens I would breakdown and cry.

But now I'm walking and I'm talking,
Doing just what I'm supposed to do.
Working overtime to make sure that I don't come unglued.
I guess I'm older now and I've got no time to cry.

Now I sit down on the sofa and I watch the evening news:
There's a half a dozen tragedies from which to pick and choose.
The baby that was missing was found in a ditch today.
And there's bombs a'flying and people dying not so far away.

And I'll take a beer from the 'fridgerator,
And go sit out in the yard and with a cold one in my hand,
I'm gonna bite down and swallow hard.
Because I'm older now: I've got no time to cry.

I've got no time to look back, I've got no time to see,
The pieces of my heart that have been ripped away from me.
And if the feeling starts to coming, I've learned to stop 'em fast.

this one KILLS me. we played it at my father-in-law's memorial service and had people clamoring to know what the song was... Not sure why, but the "And the young birds call out to be fed" line makes me cry like a train. One of my favorite Neil vocals ever

It's a Dream, by Neil Young

In the morning when I wake up and listen to the sound
Of the birds outside on the roof
I try to ignore what the paper says
And I try not to read all the news
And I'll hold you if you had a bad dream
And I hope it never comes true
'Cause you and I been through so many things together
And the sun starts climbing the roof

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

The Red River stills flows through my home town
Rollin' and tumblin' on its way
Swirling around the old bridge pylons
Where a boy fishes the morning away
His bicycle leans on an oak tree
While the cars rumble over his head
An aeroplane leaves a trail in an empty blue sky
And the young birds call out to be fed

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

An old man walks along on the sidewalk
Sunglasses and an old Stetson hat
The four winds blow the back of his overcoat away
As he stops with the policeman to chat
And a train rolls out of the station
That was really somethin' in its day
Picking up speed on the straight prairie rails
As it carries the passengers away

It's gone
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
Only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away

I saw Backyard Tire Fire tonight in New Haven with Uncle Rickey, CooleyGirl, Fronz, and Uncle Rickey's brother. It was a fine show that included an assortment of originals and covers of Neil Young (Cinnamon Girl), Tom Petty (Listen To Her Heart), and Fleetwood Mac (think it was Without You...it was surely a Danny Kirwan composition).

Iris is playing Northampton, MA this Friday but it's an early show (7 pm) so I don't think I can get there in time after work. Too bad as I haven't seen her in some time and I'm a big fan...hopefully next time she comes around. The second of the three shows I've seen by her was in late 2000 in New Jersey and it ranks as one of my favorite shows I've ever seen by any artist.

And it's fading now
Fading away
Only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away
It's only a dream
Just a memory without anywhere to stay

It's a dream
Only a dream
And it's fading now
Fading away

one of my favorites too - I posted back in this thread on 9b - favorite song off Prairie Wind

speaking of Iris Dement....love this song w/John Prine

( Iris Dement )

She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go

He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby
And I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go

In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin'
And keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go.

He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a wacked out werido and a lovebug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go

In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

(spoken) In spite of ourselves
In my blood, there's gasoline..

Spiritualized: Lord I have a broken heart

Though I have a broken heart
I'm too busy to be heartbroken
There's a lot of things that need to be done
Lord, I have a broken heart

Though I have a broken dream
I'm too busy to be dreaming of you
There's a lot of things that I gotta do
Lord, I have a broken dream

And I'm wasted all the time
I gotta drink you right off of my mind
I've been told that this will heal given time
Lord, I have a broken heart

And I'm crying all the time
I have to keep it covered up with a smile
And I'll keep on moving on for a while
Lord, I have a broken heart
In my blood, there's gasoline..

The Verve: Lucky Man

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?
In my blood, there's gasoline..

After the aforementioned show in 2000, she met fans & signed autographs for a long time & was terrific (I know because I was last in line & she was still quite friendly when she got to me). So...maybe she was having a bad day when you worked together?

People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing,
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin,
When I say that I'm o.k. they look at me kind of strange,
Surely your not happy now you no longer play the game,

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away,
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me,
When I tell that I'm doing Fine watching shadows on the wall,
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball?

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go,

People asking questions lost in confusion,
Well I tell them there's no problem,
Only solutions,
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind,
I tell them there's no hurry...
I'm just sitting here doing time,

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go.

absolutely unfathomable that's it's been nearly 30 years- will be 30 this coming December- since John Lennon was murdered. That one still hurts like a motherfucker

it gets loneliest at night
down at the liquor store
beneath the neon sky
the moonlight
six a.m. the floor comes alive with lites
the pans dried up so tight
with hardened beans
and we're hungry

so i lean on you sometimes
just to see you're still there
these feet cant take the weight of one
much less two
we hit concrete
we were born into this mess
i know i painted you a prettier picture,baby
we were run out on a rail
fell from the wagon to the night train

i kissed the bottle
i should've been kissing you
you wake up to an empty night
with tears for two

cigarettes they fill the gaps
in our empty days
in our broken teeth
say mister, can you spare a dime
some change could make a change
could buy some time
some freedom
or an ear to hear my story
it's all i've got
my fiction beats the hell out of my truth
a palm upturned burnt blue
don't call it sunburn
you've been shaking on the job
just one drink ahead of your past
there's a white light coming up
you draw the blinds hoping it'll pass

i kissed the bottle
i should've been kissing you
you wake up to an empty night
with tears for two
i kissed the bottle
i should've been kissing you
you wake up to an empty night
with tears for two
with tears for two

Have you ever seen a sight as beautiful
as that of the rain-soaked purple
of the white birch in spring?

Have you ever felt more fresh or wonderful
than on a warm fall night
under a Mackerel sky,
the smell of grapes on the wind?

Well I have known all these things
and the joys that they can bring
And I'll share them all for a cup of coffee
and to wear your ring

Have you ever had the pleasure of watching
a quiet winter's snow slowly gathering
like simple moments adding up?

Have you ever satisfied a gut feeling
to follow a dry dirt road that's beckoning you
to the heart of a shimmering summer's day?

Well I have known all these things
and the joys that they can bring
And I'll share them all for a cup of coffee
and to wear your ring

And I don't know how I survived those days
before I held your hand
Well I never thought that I would be the one
to admit that the moon and the sun
shine so much more brighter when
seen through two pairs of eyes than
when seen through just one

Have you ever seen a sight as beautiful
as a face in a crowd of people
that lights up just for you?

Have you ever felt more fresh or wonderful
as when you wake
by the side of that boy or girl
who has pledged their love to you?

Well I have known all these things
and the joys that they can bring
And now every morning there's a cup of coffee
and I wear your ring.

Cowboy Junkies Anniversary Song
Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold...

They say ev’rything can be replaced
Yet ev’ry distance is not near
So I remember ev’ry face
Of ev’ry man who put me here
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

They say ev’ry man needs protection
They say ev’ry man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd
Is a man who swears he’s not to blame
All day long I hear him shout so loud
Crying out that he was framed
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

I Shall Be Released - Bob Dylan... I also like Jeff Tweedy's version...

Your mind is a machine
It's deadly and dull
It's never been still and its will
Has never been free

Lightly tapping
A high-pitched drum

As your spine starts to shine
You shiver at your soul
A fist so clear and climbing
Punches a hole
In the sky
So you can see
For yourself
If you don't believe me

There's so much less
To this than you think

It's almost gone
The night is dissolving
In a cup God lifts
To toast the lightening

Lightly tapping
It's high-pitched and it hums

Your spine starts to shine
And you shiver at your soul
A fist so clear and climbing
Punches a hole
In the sky
So you can see
For yourself
If you don't believe me

There's so much less
To this than you think

"i'm in love.what's that song? i'm in love with that song"
alex chilton :: the replacements

patterson and the screwtopians
pollyanna
written 1991
by hood and cooley

last spring,
i was extremely fortunate to get an "advanced copy" (see::leak) of murdering oscar
when it came out proper, i bought the vinyl.
gets a fair amount of play.
just the other day, i could not get the album back in the gate-fold quite right.
inside, unbeknownst to me, was a cd copy.
i took it out to my car.
well,
i have been playing it ,again, almost non stop. yeah, pretty much non stop.
and, if i am going to only be in the car a short while,
i play track 2 on repeat. sometimes 3 or more times in a row.
and, if i pull up to my destination and the song is not over, i wait and finish it out.
if it is over, i reset it so it will start fresh when i get back in the car.

anyway,
i have decided it is a perfect song.
there are not many "perfect songs". so when they come along, it is cause for recognition/celebration.
in the past, songs that were perfect to me, were usually quiet, simple, maybe even melancholy...
(ex. almost let you in ( molina johnson), thirteen ( big star), you're a big girl now (dylan)....)

so, it has taken me awhile to realize something as different as this could be perfect.
i am certain now, it is.

follow along with me,if you will.

from the first notes
you can almost see patterson strumming and stomping his foot in the , dare i say, goofy way he does
and brad morgan so steady, so clean, and so tight and strong ( yet simple)

love these lines madly:
"said "don't look now, doll, your neurosis' are showing"
i tried to compliment her nose but she could tell that mine was growing
"

then will johnson and scott danbom come in with those fucking sweet high vocals

let's get groovy
david barbe's bass
thumping
this is what cements it for me! too cool.
it is pretty high in the mix and feels like a heartbeat. smooth.

"thought about the way things change and how she used to be
guess I wanted that girl again, guess it wasn't meant to be
she had a warmth about her that could not melt an ice cube
if i could go back in time I'd bring you back a Quaalude
"

now the keys (danbom is ridiculous) come in and things get 'sticky'
and some real tasty pedal steel from neff,

love this part!!!
bed, floor, kitchen table
i was sticky, she was sticky
!
"everything sticks to her like glue"

as an aside!!!!!! (* that is why this is a perfect song, that something as incredible as this is an 'aside'....)
who but mike cooley is playing lead guitar on this track!!!???#@$%$%
aces? fucking aces. beyond

add a little will johnson guitar licks here and there to support cooley

keys again, more pedal
patterson's voice
and then
morgan's drumming go off at the end .

all together now
cool lyrics+in the pocket drums and bass+keys+pedal steel+guitar+ harmonies= pollyanana=perfect
cake.

i knew it, when i saw them at the metro last summer, that this was a 'supergroup',
but as i keep listening, closer,
i am struck by it again...
hell,
~patterson and his lisp, passionate delivery, and masterful storytelling
real life messy fairy tales of regular people
~brad morgan, totally underrated and non attention getting. the captain of the truckers team. holding it down and funking it up.
~cooley rock star guitarist like no one else. swagger.
~john neff and scott danbom:: two unbelievably talented, subtle, multi- instrumentalist that turn every 'good' song into a 'great' song.
~will johnson ( do i really need to say anything?) yes, i do.
will is also a tremendous guitar player and his backing vocals complete pattersons in a totally unconventional way
and like i said last year
~the surprise of the year for me was david barbe.
ignorantly, i knew nothing of him before this.
the guy is a dude. a stud. beyond.
lays it down.

god, i love this song.
i was seriously thinking about starting a new thread.
dedicated to only songs. one at a time.
take one song. and break it down. not just a 'favorite song right now.'
but a song with a story.
but i got lazy.
so here it is.
hope you dig it.
i love love love this song.
a lot.

POLLYANNA

I drank some coffee while I waited at the station
She's brought back souvenirs from every vacation
Said "Don't look now, Doll, your neurosis' are showing"
I tried to compliment her nose but she could tell that mine was growing

Pollyanna does not live here

Thought about the way things change and how she used to be
Guess I wanted that girl again, guess it wasn't meant to be
She had a warmth about her that could not melt an ice cube
If I could go back in time I'd bring you back a Quaalude

Pollyanna does not live here
Pollyanna has moved far far away

The bed got sticky, the floor got sticky
The kitchen table went crashing down
I was sticky and she was sticky
Too bad she could not stick around

Everything sticks to her like glue
But I'm just something she's got stuck to the bottom of her shoe
And when she's through with me I guess I'll follow through
And wait for something new to stick to

Pollyanna does not live here
Pollyanna has moved far far away

"Monster" is Chris Quillen, who would have been a founding DBTer if he hadn't been killed in a car wreck - he's the inspiration behind "Careless" and "Marry Me" as well, you can hear some of his playing/harmonies on "Town Burned Down"

GREAT post Joelle - "Pollyanna" is one of my favorite songs, strongest song on an extremely solid album. Bravo.
