Any Bowie/Kink konnection you guys know of? Other than being British rock musicians in the 70's.

Bloated 70’s rock track that perfectly matches the swollen subject matter of the song and the record. Layered vocals, female back-up singers, horns and the band getting their trashy glam rock on. Obvious influence is obvious – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
Money can't breathe and money can't see
But when I pull out a fiver people listen to me

"Money Talks" screams Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie to my ears. Other than that, I haven't come across anything regarding a Bowie/Kinks connection. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can shed some light on it, if there is a story there.

Apparently Bowie wrote the liner notes for the above.

"I've never heard a Kinks song that I didn't like," Bowie wrote in the liner notes. "Of course, from their noisy and brash beginnings, the Kinks have come to stand for some of the most enduring and heart-clutching pop of all time. They are in the gut of every British song-writer who followed them and are indisputably a cornerstone of everything pop and rock. I love ‘em. The world loves ‘em."

So you've been where I've just come
From the land that brings losers on
So we will share this road we walk
And mind our mouths and beware our talk
this tune is also an olive branch to his older brother. i think that dave's lifestyle had long irked ray, this song was an attempt to mend that broken fence.
Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one

Incredible song. As you said, one of the Kinks best ever. Strong early 70's-weirdo Neil Young-After the Gold Rush vibe.

That song overwhelms me.
What a great fucking thread this is !!! I was pretty familiar with the Kinks catalog before this, but I have discovered some absolute masterpieces since this thread got going.

Me, too. It's become my mantra. I'm in it pretty deep these days & The Kinks have helped me cope in ways I wasn't anticipating. This thread has been incredibly therapeutic for me personally.

1/2 assed theory of the night:

kinks and the band are similar in many ways. musically speaking. different but using like vibeness and such. musically orbiting in the same solar system of americana type rock and roll influences. with an innate proficiency.

the kinks were not one trick ponies, tho. the band was. no slight intended.

or some shit like that.

Most interesting as always, dime. I don't know about 1/2 assed, but I'd say pretty original and at least 1/2 right. Both were anti the trends of their time and since their time overlapped, they were both most obviously anti the long form guitar based jam and psychedelia that was so prevalent in the late 60's and both were masters of song form/craft. Both had great musical talent - I'd say "proficient" sells both bands short, particularly the Band but as you have made abundantly clear, no band w/ Dave Davies on guitar is short on virtuosity. Both gave their audience something to hold on to in turbulent times because both wrote about their roots and what they perceived to be the true heart of their respective cultures at a time when finding that heart and the common ground it provided was incredibly difficult for so many people. Both incorporated their vast musical influences into something unique and original but I'd say that's where they diverge - while there's some common ground on those influences there's also a whole lot of difference. Which is why the Kinks are so quintessentially English and the Band is so quintessentially something not English (I'm tempted to say American w/out being Americans but that diminishes their achievement so I'll just leave the labels off).

And FWIW, the Kinks were around for a lot longer and explored a lot more musical and thematic territory than the Band so I agree w/ your [non] one trick pony statement though I might not have said it that way :)

Not half assed. I've thought that too. Both outfits poignantly shirked the psychedelia of 1967 in favor of structured song-craft. Village Green = Big Pink. Arthur = eponymous / (Brown Album)

No doubt. Throw in Bob Dylan with John Wesley Harding and you've got an anti-psychedelic trifecta.

I also believe the addition of keyboardist John Gosling (far left) in 1970 brought similar layers to The Kinks' sound that Garth Hudson did for The Band. Additionally, both bands incorporated a good amount of Dixieland horns into their music.

all very excellent points, gentlemen. ya'll are on it.

don't forget about the many appalachian stylings with the banjo and such. accordion too.

also.....bother dave's vox sounds reminiscent of a cross between rick danko and richard manuel.

all across multiple albums and years...even decades.

The 32-year-old, along with 55-year-old Simon Medhurst, had superglued themselves together around the drill site's gate on July 31st to create a "striking and symbolic" media image, according to The BBC, to raise awareness about fracking (a technique to fracture shale rock and retrieve natural gasses within).
Sounds like Natalie is a real-life Sun Green.

Sun Green started makin' waves
On the day her grandpa died
Speakin' out against anything
Unjust or packed with lies

She chained herself to a statue of an eagle
In the lobby of Powerco
And started yellin' through a megaphone
"There's corruption on the highest floor"

Particularly on "Strangers". I mentioned above the After the Gold Rush/Shakey vibe. But if we're being 100% honest/accurate, the ATGR vibe is really a Big Pink/Brown Album mutation. Leave it to the Canucks and Brits to perfect that Americana sound.

kudzu mia addition.....

Image
kinks/sleepwalker

released: february, 1977

stripped down and polished up. yet another sound from a crazy diverse band....perhaps more kinks than any other record of theirs.

hard rock and roll alert, btb. including massive power ballads and the like.

4sooner turned me on this beauty several years ago...hat tip.

18th album in 12 years (ish)
recorded at konk studios
1st release for arista records
produced by ray davies

amazing chops from the band and beautiful, dark character driven songs from ray.

right hand and right brain.

clive davis clean sheen that takes a little acclimation. production actually benefits the listener in hearing all the kick ass guitar runs and chord stranglers that are contained, herein. shit ton of great rock and roll beneath the shine.

don't read the reviews, don't pay attention to the negative hype about the production. jump in and rock balls to one of the great rock and roll bands of all time ripping it up and laying it down.

i love this record...without hesitation.

because i am tired of my own words....let the music speak for itself.

sleepwalker

mr. big man

jukebox music-dave davies is a god. check the dual vox and shredding at the end. too good.

life on the road

these clips are stupidly great rock songs and performances. a band at the top of it's game.

sleepwalker is a hidden gem in a career made up of hidden gems.

to be continued.......
