Does Humor Belong In Music?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Mozart thought so. I remember reading about this many years ago and had to look it up.

Of course I don't find it funny at all, but what do I know?

How about humorless musicians? See, e.g., Eric Clapton.

Pathetic, Washed-Up Rock Star On Fifth Decade Of Doing Exactly What He Always Wanted

Image

DETROIT—Peter Wolf, a pitiful, has-been rock musician who hasn’t had a platinum record since 1981, has now spent more than 40 happy years doing exactly what he always wanted, reports confirmed this week...

^^^ How bizarre to choose Peter Wolf. I get the point of the article and have no problem w/ it. I only wish it applied to more musicians. But they've got Peter Wolf almost 100% wrong. He hardly tours at all (though he has done more recently both w/ the J Geils Band and solo). He has made several excellent albums even if they haven't sold much. I know I'm not alone in considering Sleepless to be Top 100 material and Fool's Parade Top 500. And while his marriage to Faye Dunaway broke up a few lifetimes ago as far as I know the guy continues to have exactly zero problems on the dating circuit. If he's washed up would somebody please wash me up?

Perhaps I didn't. What I got from it is that Peter Wolf (for instance) may seem to "you" (not you "you", but them "you") to be washed up, but that he's actually still successful, if not as successful, and doing what he wants to do. So fuck "you" (again, them "you", those "you"s over there, and not any "you" here in this any how town). Did I read it wrong?

No, you read it correctly. I just don't think Peter Wolf fits the stereotype they're going for but perhaps I'm too sensitive or else I'm getting soft.

On Facebook, someone named Jimmy Lange wrote:Bono once wrote a letter to Captain Beefheart asking if he would be interested in writing/recording together. The reply was hand written, and it said this:

Dear Bongo, No.

Major Tom: the NASA Investigation

Image
George Meyer reports that CAPCOM wrote:In addition, the panel determined that T minus ten seconds was far too late in the launch sequence for Major Tom to “put [his] helmet on.” Consequently, his CO2 purge valve went unchecked, and he did not have time to rub his visor with anti-fog compound.

the problem with most of the humor in contemporary music is that it is unintentional
