The Waterboys' long-awaited new album Modern Blues will be released on January 19th. The album was recorded in Nashville, produced by Mike Scott and mixed by the great Bob Clearmountain. Modern Blues is an electric, soulful, bold, freewheeling rock'n'roll record with a skinful of killer new songs, some of which have been premiered live over the past few years. Ralph Salmins, a mainstay on drums for the past four years, appears alongside the talismanic Steve Wickham, who weaves a dizzying fuzz fiddle spell on several tracks. Fresh to the ranks are Memphis keyboard player “Brother” Paul Brown and David Hood, legendary bassist from Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Additional lead guitars are played by 2013 US Waterboy Jay Barclay and Austin soul guitarist Zach Ernst. Guest backing vocalists include southern soul legend Don Bryant. The album cover is a green man photograph titled The King Of Weeds, by New York artists Kahn and Selesnick. Modern Blues will be accompanied by a worldwide tour and details will be announced soon.

Track listing:

1. Destinies Entwined 5.45
2. November Tale 5.18
3. Still A Freak 3.59
4. I Can See Elvis 5.47
5. The Girl Who Slept For Scotland 4.56
6. Rosalind (You Married The Wrong Guy) 5.09
7. Beautiful Now 3.58
8. Nearest Thing To Hip 5.42
9. Long Strange Golden Road 10.23

What I wouldn't give for a "return to form" MMJ album...

No such thing. James just said that he likes throwing curveballs every album. He has no interest in going back to old styles

His touring buddies, the Bottle Rockets, should have their new one out in 2015 as well. Those two and American Aquarium are what I am waiting on.

If we're talking albums, sure. But he's written plenty of individual songs I've loved in that period

I got to where I like Circuital a lot, and Evil Urges has it's moments. I'm not a fan at all of Z, though (aside from a couple tracks)

Seriously Smitty? I thought they'd be up your alley. Didn't you see them with all of us at Waverly last year?

Also,

On February 24th, 2015, JJ Grey & Mofro will release their newest recording, Ol’ Glory. This album marks their debut on Provogue Records, which is part of the Mascot Label Group. Ol’ Glory contains 12 new songs that feature the deep, soulful blend of blues, rock, folk, funk, gospel, gritty R&B and personal, Southern-inspired narratives that have become synonymous with JJ Grey & Mofro.

Ol' Glory was recorded at Retrophonics Studio in Saint Augustine, FL, where Grey has tracked many times. An avid surfer, Grey often spent the mornings at the beach and the afternoons recording. Ol' Glory showcases the strength of Mofro members Anthony Cole (drums and percussion), Andrew Trube (guitar), Anthony Farrell (piano/organ), Todd Smallie (bass) and Dennis Marion (trumpet) and Jeff Dazey (saxophone). Special guests include Luther Dickinson on dobro and electric slide guitar and Derek Trucks on electric slide guitar.

OK, I'm shocked at both of you. What's not to like here? Solid harmonies, tight as a duck's ass, good songwriting. I get subjectivity but what's the beef here?
