Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Post by Tequila Cowboy »

This one was noticeably absent (although we did do this last year on 9b). Here's a quick top ten to get us started. INPO:

Drive-By Truckers- Decoration Day
Slobberbone- Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today
My Morning Jacket- It Still Moves
Centro-Matic-Fort Recovery
Ben Harper- Diamonds on the Indside
Levon Helm- Dirt Farmer
Ryan Bingham- Mescolito
Alejandro Ecovedo- Real Animal
Hayes Carll- Trouble in Mind
Drive-By Truckers- Southern Rock Opera
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

It would already be different, and maybe i'll get around to doing a new one, but in the meantime, here's my "controversial" list from 9B:

Here’s today’s version of the best non jazz/classical, non live and non reissue albums that I heard during the past 10 years, with full knowledge (and regret) that there’s a ton of stuff that I haven’t heard. The list breaks down into the top 15 – 20ish (call them the “A” albums), the next 25 – 30ish (“A-“) and the rest (“B+”). I started out aiming for a list of 50 but it was just too hard to distinguish between, say, 40 & 70, so here they all are. Still, that’s an average of only 7/yr, which doesn’t seem out of whack.

70. Booker T. Jones – Potato Hole
69. The New Pornographers – Mass Romantic
68. The National – Boxer
67. The Rolling Stones – A Bigger Bang
66. Elvis Costello – Momofuku
65. The Streets – A Grand Don’t Come For Free
64. Andrew Bird – Noble Beast
63. The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound
62. The Scissor Sisters – s/t
61. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago

60. M. Ward – Hold Time
59. Al Green – Lay It Down
58. Warren Zevon – The Wind
57. Lucero – Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers
56. Bruce Springsteen – Magic
55. Dexateens – Hardwire Healing
54. The Shins – Oh, Inverted World
53. Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
52. The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow
51. Neko Case – Middle Cyclone

50. Bruce Springsteen – The Seeger Sessions
49. Son Volt – American Central Dust
48. Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
47. Jason Isbell – Sirens of the Ditch
46. Bettye Lavette – I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise
45. Fountains of Wayne – Traffic and Weather
44. The Hold Steady – Stay Positive
43. Sufjan Stevens – Come on Feel the Illinoise
42. Paul Pena – New Train
41. Dinosaur, jr. – Farm

40. Maceo Parker – Dial Maceo
39. Art Brut – Bang Bang Rock n Roll
38. Arctic Monkeys – Whatever You Say I Am…
37. Bob Dylan – Modern Times
36. Ellis Hooks - Uncomplicated
35. The New Pornographers – Electric Version
34 Amy Winehouse – Back to Black
33. TV on the Radio – Dear Science
32. Felix Cavaliere & Steve Cropper – Nudge It Up a Notch
31. Dexateens – Singlewide

30. Patterson Hood – Murdering Oscar
29. Lucinda Williams – West
28. Fleet Foxes – s/t
27. The Raconteurs – Consolers of the Lonely
26. Yo La Tengo – Popular Songs
25. The Drive By Truckers – Brighter Than Creation’s Dark
24. Yo La Tengo – I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
23. Radiohead – In Rainbows
22. James McMurtry – Just Us Kids
21. Levon Helm – Dirt Farmer

20. The White Stripes - Elephant
19. The Bottle Rockets - Zoysia
18. Various Artists – Nigeria Rock Special
17. Bruce Springsteen – The Rising
16. Antony & the Johnsons – I Am A Bird Now
15. The Drive By Truckers – The Dirty South
14. Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins – Rabbit Fur Coat
13. Bettye Lavette – Scene of the Crime
12. Derek Trucks Band – Already Free
11. Col. Parker – Rock n Roll Music

10. The White Stripes – White Blood Cells
9. U2 – All That You Can’t Leave Behind
8. Drive By Truckers – Southern Rock Opera
7. The Hold Steady –Boys and Girls in America
6. Green Day – American Idiot
5. Tabu Ley Rochereau – The Voice of Lightness: Congo Classics
4. Fountains of Wayne – Welcome Interstate Managers
3. Bob Dylan – Love and Theft
2. Peter Wolf - Sleepless
1. Drive By Truckers – Decoration Day

I don’t listen to a whole lot of hip hop but I think these are really good albums in that genre:

Outkast – Stankonia
Outkast – Speakerboxx/The Love Below
Kanye West – College Dropout
Nas – Street’s Disciple

A special shout out to the “English soul babes,” none of whom made a consistently top notch album (other than Amy Winehouse), but all of whom made some great music, and all of whom are extraordinarily talented, especially given their uniformly young age, and eerily reminiscent of their inspirations:

Joss Stone – The Soul Sessions; Mind, Body, Soul; and Introducing
Duffy – Rockferry
Adele – 19
Estelle – Shine
What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard

I have an awfully tough time with ranking - so, I'm going to go alphabetical. Fifty that epitomize my decade (from my personal catalog) - AND - with one rule: I am disciplining myself to pick a representative album from a band or artist, rather than stacking the deck with a prolific band (like dbt for example). Also, I loved Neil's & Dylan's albums in the Aughts, but left them off this list to try and focus on newer artists... tough choices to get this list down to fifty.

Alejandro Escovedo - A Man Under The Influence
The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse
Ben Harper & The Blind Boys of Alabama - There Will Be A Light
The Black Keys - Thickfreakness
The Bottle Rockets - Zoysia
Brandi Carlile - The Story
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Calexico - Feast Of Wire
Centro-Matic - Fort Recovery
Cracker/Leftover Salmon - Oh Cracker Where Art Thou
Deadstring Brothers - Starving Winter Report
Deer Tick - Born On Flag Day
The Dexateens - Hardwire Healing
Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
The Drive-by Truckers - Decoration Day
The Felice Brothers - Tonight At The Arizona
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
Glossary - The Better Angels Of Our Nature
Golden Smog - Another Fine Day
The Gourds - Cow Fish Fowl or Pig
Govt. Mule - The Deep End Vol.1
Hayes Carll - Trouble In Mind
The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America
JJ Cale - To Tulsa And Back
Jack Johnson - On And On
James McMurtry - Live in Aught Three
Jay Farrar - Sebastopol
John Hiatt - Master of Disaster
John Medeski, The North Mississippi Allstars, Robert Randolph - The Word
Kathleen Edwards - Asking For Flowers
Levon Helm - Electric Dirt
Los Lobos - Good Morning Atzlan
Lucero - Tennessee
Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears
Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.
Mark Knopfler - Sailing to Philidelphia
moe. - Wormwood
My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
Neko Case - Blacklisted
Paul Westerberg - Mono/Stereo
Radiohead - Kid A
Ray LaMontagne - Trouble
Robert Earl Keen - Farm Fresh Onions
Ryan Adams - Gold
The Sadies - Favorite Colours
Slobberbone - Everything You Thought Was Right Today Was Wrong
Steve Earle - Transcendental Blues
The Whipsaws - Ten Day Bender
Widespread Panic - Don't Tell The Band
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

My favorite records of the last 10 years would basically be a list of all the DBT records. But as good as all the Truckers' records are, this might top 'em all.... I love it that much.
