Just finished my first listen and I think this album is great! The Dap Kings bring a lot to the sound and I dig it.

I'm one of the people that he had mentioned were going to be mad when the new album came out....I don't dig all the horns and orchestration. I'd rather it have just been Sturgill and his old 3 pc backing band...but to each his own. I appreciate the album, and think it's some good songwriting, but it's not for me musically. I have a lot of respect for him to abandon what brought him his success and do what he wanted to do though. He could've released Metamodern II and had a huge success. But, it seems like intially the critics are on board, so it may be a commercially successful venture for him. Will also be interesting to see if these songs get stripped down to a more traditional format in a live setting.

I think you make some valid points and I agree, hearing this live will be interesting because I doubt that he will have a horn section. I may be wrong but I just don't see it happening.

loving the new album!! while the in bloom cover doesnt quite match up with cash's hurt cover,, it is beautiful none the less..last tune is this albums Band moment..excited to see if he tours with the dap horns..game changer!!

One listen in I have no idea if I think this is great or a crock of radio friendly shit. First impression is one of disappointment, but who knows what repeated listens will bring.I usually like horns, but they almost seem to overwhelm the songs on this record.

I wish he hadn't done In Bloom, although at least it's a totally different take on it.

you must not be familiar with the state of rock or country radio over here. theres nothing on here that sounds like thats what hes aiming for

i think its his best album by far and finally delivers on the space country i imagined from the metamodern sounds hype

Like I say, only had one listen. Have no idea what radio is like over there, but this records could not be described as a hard or challenging listen. It would certainly be called "radio friendly" in UK -ideal stuff for the Dad rockers on BBC radio 2.

Instead of trailing off after the last "don't know what it means" (Kurt sorta muble-sings "and I say yeah," iirc), Sturgill says "...to love someone" or some shit, effectively changing the entire meaning of the song. The irony I was referring to is that the subject of the song (prevailing Nirvana-nerd wisdom is that it's about Dylan Carlson) likes all the "pretty songs" but doesn't know what they are about. Sturgill, by changing the lyrics, proves he doesn't, either. Meta, dude.

Digging the NPR listen so far today. I had a feeling after all his talk it was going to be a curveball record, and so will the next, the last will go back to his roots, then it will be over, just my guess.

Sugar Daddy, Brace, In Bloom, all curve balls and the rest follows suit. I do like the re-make of Sunday Valley Oh Sarah, probably my favorite Sturgill song ever. Just a great easy lyrical love song...

Got the pre-order package. Live experience should be good especially if he brings back that Oh Sarah, which I suspect he will. There is a recording of it on PanicStream 3/1/15 3rd & Lindsy Nashville, great version, great recording quality.
