John Prine & "September 78" LP
In the fall of 1978, singer-songwriter John Prine returned home to Chicago for a concert appearance at the famed Park West club. The show, captured on the limited edition album September 78, features John backed by his rock n’ roll band, ably led by longtime friend Johnny Burns.

Angelo Varias played drums, alongside bassist Tommy ‘Pickles’ Piekarski, while Howard Levy joined on organ, piano and harmonica. Johnny Burns and his signature guitar licks locked the whole thing together.

Prine’s Oh Boy Records is pressing just 2000 individually-numbered LPs of September 78. It will be initially released for Record Store Day on April 18, 2015. The album also features two cover tracks - "Try To Find Another Man," made famous by The Righteous Brothers, as well as "Treat Me Nice," originally sung by Elvis Presley.

September 78 will be released on 180 gram, 12-inch, orange vinyl. Each LP also comes with a digital download of the record's ten tracks.

John Prine hopes that his fans will enjoy this performance from a special period of time in his career.

The label for this release is listed as All Access so I'm not sure if it's sanctioned by Oh Boy Records. It's due to come out tomorrow according to Amazon's U.K. site but is not listed at all on Amazon's U.S. site. The Oh Boy online store is presently under construction so it'll be interesting to see if it's listed when it relaunches. There's not much info about it on Amazon but it appears to come from an episode of the King Biscuit Flower Hour from a performance recorded at the Bottom Line in New York on July 11, 1978 according to this version (18 songs instead of 30) of it that's available via ConcertVault.com. You can also find more info about the gig itself at that site.

John Prine reflects on life rich in music
Ten years past a bout with cancer that could have ended his career, the esteemed troubadour re-teams with Kris Kristofferson, an early champion of his work.

Awesome. Thanks for that. I actually listened to Pink Cadillac earlier today.
I once heard John describe his songs as "sad but sweet" and that fits a ton of them perfectly.

JP is playing locally next week - who has seen him lately? What can I expect? I know he's been battling it for the past few years and his health is in decline, but how is the show? Thanks

I'm roughly ¾'s of the way through Eddie Huffman's bio on John Prine and learning lots of stuff I never knew before, like how "Illegal Smile" was the theme song for this short lived ABC sitcom starring Jack Elam, Gary Busey and Mark Hamill that first aired back in 74/75. It didn't last long 'cause it was up against The Rockford Files.

The pioneer of the singer-songwriter movement performed his first album in its entirety – and many
of its songs ring as true today as 45 years ago
