Quicklist: Codas

Post by Zip City »

Quick definition: in a song that has resolved itself, an instrumental outro that lifts the song to another place

Some obvious ones:

Derek and the Dominoes - Layla
DBT - Grand Canyon
DBT - Decoaration Day

Another:

Wilco - Art of Almost
And I knew when I woke up Rock N Roll would be here forever

^^^^ good one

A couple by Bruce: E Street Shuffle and Wreck on the Highway.

Also has anyone mentioned Isbell's coda to Last Song I Will Write (even though it's technically a spate track)?

I wish I knew where to make meme-images. If I did, I'd make one with Jimi Hendrix in his black hat, and two captions, kind of like this:

I don't always put codas in songs...

Image

...but when I do, "1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)" has enough of them that they call them transitions.

what's the opposite of a coda, just an intro?

this is probably my fave (although UO's one on "Emmaline" is awesome in its own right), and i esp like how they built on it for the LP track, as opposed to the original 7" recording. i remember seeing them play it live before the record came out and being blown away.

For those not interested in listening to the whole thing (pearls before swine    ) the coda begins around the 16:23 minute mark. One of my all-time favorite GD memories that I witnessed and a Terrapin that is legendary in the land of the Dead. This was the 3rd of three Hampton shows that were the first post-coma east coast GD shows and the energy was over the edge from the start of the run
