obvious big influence is obvious.....

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

I've never noticed the Steve Miller influence in MMJ or the Replacements influence in Lucero. Interesting.

Now for some with some 'Mats influence that I hear loud as day:

Replacements-Two Cow Garage
Replacements- Slobberbone
Replacements- Hold Steady
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

I actually think the 'Mats influence on THS isn't as obvious/strong as the perception of it is. I agree wholeheartedly with Two Cow Garage and Slobberbone though. I hear Westerberg and the drunken sloppy beautiful mix of rock, punk, and country in the middle of Lucero's career in a big, big way. The whole quiet little songs and cranking of the amps being intertwined that Westerberg has talked about before.

In addition:
Thin Lizzy - The Hold Steady

The very first time I ever heard THS, with Boys and Girls in America, I asked my buddy if they were from Minneapolis. He kind of looked at me and stared and said not really but that some of them were and how did I know that. I could immediately tell that they had listened to an awful lot of Westerberg and company. Maybe it's not as obvious as advertised but it's obvious to me.

It's definitely there, I just personally think it gets brought up more because of the Minneapolis thing.

Oh, I like this a lot! I'd put it a little later, though--more Aqualung/Thick As A Brick/Passion Play era. Which CD should I start with?

lots of slick sheen, jazzy reverb, echo, twisty keys, bells, effects with stellar guitar, bad hair and polyester pants. perhaps a cowbell or wood block occasionally.

The raw, in your face embracing of sexuality, alcohol/drugs, and self destructive relationships of Lucinda Williams is all over her work. I immediately drew parallels to Lucinda when I first listened to Lydia and not just because they're both women.
