Future People is my favorite!
ain't no static on the gospel radio
Re: What happened to the Alabama Shakes?
I'm meh on the release but my favorite song is This Feeling. Sounds like a 70's Stones outtake.
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

On CBS's Sunday morning very shortly here.
and that pussy Alec Baldwin blew that girl away, and speaking of pussy Steve got it all!
Re: What happened to the Alabama Shakes?
Nice to see these guys put out a strong second album. Quite a few solid tracks, with something for everyone.
Interested in how it comes across live.
Put Future People in the plus column for me.

I took the liberty of changing the title of this thread because with the #1 record in America it's clear that nothing has happened to them, well except fame, fortune and a hit record of course. It made me wince every time I clicked on it. If you've got issues with the name change leave Clams alone and blame me.

The title change is ok. Leaving clams alone is just over the line, tc. What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard
Re: The Alabama Shakes Thread
Finally got around to listening to the album yesterday. Didn't care for it at all, just not my cup of tea I guess. Might try to give it another listen later to see if something clicks.
Re: The Alabama Shakes Thread
I've enjoyed every listen I've given to this album, but I'm not really compelled to keep listening.

OK fine, just blame Clams. After all it's on a tee shirt so it must be true.beantownbubba wrote:The title change is ok. Leaving clams alone is just over the line, tc. I'm on a rum-filled tear through my records while I make chai concentrate for work. Once I'm down to the last batch and after Gangstabilly, I;m going to give it another turn.

A bit more excited about this summer's backwards double bill.

Just heard from the promoter that the show at Red Rocks with DBT is about to sellout.

Appreciate and respect what they're doing on this one. Didn't care for the first record especially compared to live. Straight up retro is played out.

Interesting. I think Future People sounds like an MMJ song.Penny Lane wrote:I've never really been a big fan of the band and I don't think they should be trying to 'pull back' the strongest factor--which is Brittany! I feel like she needs to go into the studio with just a jack white or a dan auerbach and cut a stripped down record. This stuff isn't working.

Re: The Alabama Shakes Thread
Here's the thing, I like what the first record represented in terms of sound but it was barely more than a demo. I was looking forward to more of that. I mean in 2015 who in the world is playing garage/soul? St. Paul & the Broken Bones are playing straight out Eddie HInton/Otis Redding Soul without a touch of irony but nobody does what Brittany and the boys were doing. In the interview with Patterson they mention that they were starting to play an entirely different batch of tunes for a second record, scrapped them and came up with what became Sound & Color. I heard some of those and they were promising. I hope to hear to them someday. The other thing that I thought was interesting in that interview is how Patterson mentioned that it sounds like they skipped thier second record and went straight to the third or fourth. I agree with that. This new record sounds like a band that moved on from what they started with and found a new thing. That's admirable and I like the record, especially loud, but man it was jarring at first. I laughed out loud at the suggestion that Future People sounds like an MMJ song because that's it exactly. Lots of unnecessary noises and sounds when all I want is songs. Fortunately it's the only song that feels blatantly like that on the record. Forget trying to make music that people will hail as genius, listen to Radiohead if that's your thing, I want to hear Brittany sing and the boys play like they can and, for the most part, that's intact on this record and I can groove to that.lotusamerica wrote:Appreciate and respect what they're doing on this one. I don't find any of the sounds in Future People to be unnecessary.
I do find rehashing 50 year old soul music to be unnecessary, though

Re: The Alabama Shakes Thread
Why? Nobody is really making it anymore. We still have people making country records that evoke bygone times, Sturgill Simpson could be considered a throwback with a modern touch or two and their are blues artists making records that, apart from superior technology, could have been made 60 years ago. In the world of books there's genre fiction what's wrong with well produced "genre music"? As I said before that synth noise in Future People is jarring to me and almost painful. If people like it I'm good with that, like people like Radiohead too and I don't understand that either. Vive la différence.Zip City wrote:I don't find any of the sounds in Future People to be unnecessary.

I'm just saying that soul for the 21st century is more exciting (to me) than the same soul music I can listen to from decades ago
