Your Top Ten Favorite Bands/Artists of All Time

Post by Tequila Cowboy »

We've done this and variations on this before but I thought it would be fun to do it again over at 3DD and get a glimpse into some of the newer folks' tastes. Mine's always a bit in flux but many haven't left the top ten in twenty years or more. INPO:

The Replacements
DBT
The Rolling Stones
The Clash
Led Zeppelin
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Bob Dylan
The Grateful Dead
Dire Straits
Faces
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Tough to limit it to ten, but I'll try. No particular order

1: Drive By Truckers -- their site, they get to be number one.
2: The Rolling Stones
3: The Velvet Underground
4: Neil Young and Crazy Horse
5: Buddy Holly
6: Echo and The Bunnymen
7: The Gun Club
8: Waylon Jennings
9: Hank Williams
10: The Replacements

A bunch of artists I couldn't fit, and tomorrow the list might be entirely different.

Beatles
Wilco
Red Hot Chili Peppers
DMB
Grateful Dead
The Black Crowes
The Allman Brothers

That list will change tomorrow, and probably will for the next 50 years

something like this:

The Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen
Neil Young
The Replacements
DBT
Bob Dylan
Guns N' Roses
New York Dolls
The Clash
Manic Street Preachers

ordering is kinda arbitrary, but the top seven will always be in the top ten at least, in roughly that order, the rest are a mess and there's about ten bands/artists I could've put there instead...

Wow, looking back at everyone's posts you see a lot of repeats, especially the Stones. That speaks volumes about those bands. Also, DBT should be hella proud to be among the ranks with the bands we mention here. But hell, they deserve to be!

Derek Trucks Band IS bad ass. The Songlines album is some of the best driving music I know of. Especially Sahib Teri Bandi - Maki Madni. I always blast that when driving up and over Monteagle Mountain.

I don't think it is over the top to put them in the same class as Neil Young, The Stones, Waylon and Willie or anyone else. They have as many great songs as any other band in rock and roll history.

Derek is my favorite guitarist...Actually exactly one year ago today I saw them for the 3rd time. I flew especially to England to catch them at three shows there in April 2009. It was a fantastic experience. I also met and talked to the entire band, including Derek. He and all of them are such nice guys, very down to earth. And the shows were awesome. Seeing Derek playing as close to him as you can be, right in front you, it's like a religious experience or something :) I was blown away.

"Songlines" is awesome. Also the earlier stuff and of course the last one "Already Free". I think they did to "Down In The Flood" what Hendrix did to "All Along The Watchtower". Amazing cover. Great album all along.

Can't wait for "Roadsongs" coming in June. Recorded also on the tour last year. I didn't saw Susan Tedeschi yet...I love her very much as well. Hope to catch her in a show someday.

right at this very minute listening to Derek go absolutely berserk on a Mountain Jam from Oakland May 12, 2009. Was so lucky to see the ABB three times last year and the DTB once, he's a master. Hope he recovers from the broken ankle ASAP

Which is exactly why I ended my post with "But hell, they deserve to be!".

What sets them apart from the others and makes it notable is the difference in fame or exposure between DBT and a band like the Stones, Zeppelin, etc.

Subject to change, of course and INPO, except the top 3 would be hard to displace:

Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
The Ramones
Al Green
Drive By Truckers
Eric Clapton in some of his many guises
The Band
The Talking Heads

It's kind of insane how much of the music i love this doesn't include but that's the nature of "top 10" i guess.

The Velvet Underground didn't start making people's top ten lists until the 1980's, especially after REM recorded a bunch of Velvets songs as b-sides. During their time they were unappreciated by everyone except rock critics. DBT have a bigger following than the Velvets did during their time, but VU only released four studio albums and were together for only five years or so.

Eventually DBT will be more famous and have more exposure. Their body of work is too damn strong to be ignored forever. I think that every album from SRO onward is a five stars out of five stars record. They are kind of like Cormac McCarthy. His work was relatively obscure from the 1960's to around 1990, despite the fact that he'd already written such classic novels as Suttree, Blood Meridian and The Orchard Keeper. But eventually the praise of critics and other writers became overwhelming. All The Pretty Horses won a National Book Award in the early 1990's and he's been on the shortlist for the Nobel Prize for Literature ever since.
