I had ZERO idea that it was a cver... its like the Clash's Pressure Drop or Police & Thieves: love the cover, go look up the originals.... love the original. not more. differently.

I don't have a good mental checklist of the possible contenders but "Waitin' For a Friend" comes to mind.

I'm torn between "Oh Bondage Up Yours" and something--anything!--from Buy The Contortions.

As always, when this board puts its collective mind to something, it's gonna surprise me. Before these lists starting appearing, I would have guessed that "Who'll Stop the Rain" would have been the most likely candidate to be the most listed song. Obviously it's not even close. That's not to criticize anybody else's choices, it's just a personal reaction based on a combination of my own regard for the song and my perception of the song's popularity.

Whereas I would have guessed "Fortunate Son", but for similar reasons.

I have Fortunate Son & Who'll Stop The Rain in my CCR Top 5; but It wasn't a slam dunk. I'm not sure of the numbers; but I think Bad Moon Rising might have been their biggest hit & Proud Mary was pretty big as well. CCR was a radio hit machine. They might have more hits per songs recorded than anyone. I think that is a testament to their universal appeal. I haven't met too many people who didn't like CCR.

70's era Aerosmith pretty much influenced the entire 80's metal scene and no matter how much you may look down your nose at that particular genre there's no denying that those bands sold a ton of records, tshirts, and concert tickets and were the soundtrack to an entire generation of teens. I actually got into 70's era Aerosmith in Jr. High because all my favorite bands were constantly talking about them in the pages of Circus and Hit Parader magazine. For what it's worth lol.

Whereas I decided I loved Jonathan Richman and Patti Smith sight-unseen (sound-unheard?), and that this punk rock/new wave stuff was the shit, just by reading about them in, yes, the under-appreciated Hit Parader.
(I was somewhat disappointed to find that "Anarchy in the UK" didn't sound like my version, but wotthehell.)

I do think Aerosmith was highly influential, but it was the hair bands (Poison, Warrant, Skid Row etc.), more so than the metal bands. Metal bands like Anthrax, Megadeath, Metallica & Pantera were influenced much more by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin & even Blue Oyster Cult than they were by Aerosmith (IMO). I'm sure Bill could elaborate further on this.

Somewhat true. The 80's Glam Metal bands (I hate the term hair metal lol) like Motley Crue, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Kix etc., were all heavily influenced by early Aerosmith with a dose of the New York Dolls, early KISS, Alice Cooper, TRex, & Mott The Hoople mixed in. Guns N' Roses were also heavily influenced by early Aerosmith, but luckily Duff Mckagan brought a much needed punk influence which made GnR stand out from the other later era Glam Metal bands overtaking the Sunset Strip at the time.
In my opinion the Thrash Metal scene which included Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer etc., were more influenced by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands coming out of England and Europe. And Black Sabbath lol. Sabbath influenced most metal bands of the era not matter the genre of metal.
Of course this is all IMHO. There are so many genres and subgenres when it comes to "metal" that it boggles the mind. Bottom line is Aerosmith was a very influential US band for an entire genre of music.

I love the term "hair metal" myself. I think it's the most accurate ridiculous genre moniker ever.

Which is why I made the comment "no matter how much you may look down your nose at that particular genre". It's guaranteed that any thread on an internet message board that mentions 80's metal bands will include at least 50% snide comments about said genre lol.

Is the percentage of musical snobbery on message boards that high?

I love early Aerosmith, Foghat, Mother's Finest, Grand Funk Railroad, Edgar Winter, Steppenwolf, etc. I never did get into hair metal even though it was nearly everywhere you turned in the 80's and into the early 90's.

Anyone who thinks you mean Poison or Warrant when you say "80's Metal" should just roll up the window of thier IROC and go back to finger banging the skank in the acid washed skirt.
