stoner records

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

For a shock, get out your copy of Stevie Wonder's live Natural Wonder record. Yanni wrote the liner notes. I'm guessing that wouldn't have happened if America's greatest living musician didn't like him at least a little bit.

Also pretty much anything by Boris. They're basically Japan's answer to the Flaming Lips, but with more of a metal vibe at times.

Good call Tyler. Boris is really good too.

I also recommend Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. quite a bit.

Yeah, God could speak from the heavens and tell me that Yanni rocks and I wouldn't believe him. Plus Stevie did record Ebony & Ivory so nobody's perfect.

I'd have to be stoned to listen to Yanni

Listen to their oldest stuff, and it's pure metal, pure drone. They've gone a bit overboard with the pop stuff in the last few years, in my opinion.

My god, I hated that song at the time. (The other track Paul/Stevie track from that album was the shit! [I think it might have been the Stevie/Paul track.]) When I reviewed that record, I believe I made reference to Lenny Bruce:

Father Lenny wrote:To play ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ you need the white keys and the darkies.

(You'll note that Time magazine got the quote wrong in a very obvious way five years ago and still hasn't fixed it.)

Now, I'm a little less hateful toward it. But it's still no Silly Love Songs.

Exactly! In my case, since I have now more or less quit smoking pot,* I no longer own any stoner records

* this does not mean that if you happen to see me when your burning a fatty that you shouldn't offer me a hit. I did say more or less.

I'm a member of that "more or less" club my own damn self nowadays. Suits my 52 year old ass just fine.

I think the ultimate stoner record is King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King. They used to say that if you listened to it on acid you would see God but although weed didn't get you that far I think St. Peter passed a joint to me once or twice.

Seriously? Not pulling your chain, just surprised. I always thought of that album as the one "prog rock" or "art rock" album that everyone knew and liked. Sort of mirroring TC's experiences but not, I can't tell you how many interpretations I heard of the hidden meanings in that damn album cover.

Apropos of nothing, as I was typing that, Amel Larrieux was singing "What you call monogamy is lying to everyone." Forgot how much I like this album (Infinite Possibilities) Probably would sound good stoned, too.

I hate to tell you this, but I think I've listened to it maybe once and don't really recall it. Odd, because I was a huge ELP fan back in the day and have (and have liked) pretty much everything by the Nice and Atomic Rooster, and I am a huge fan of the Discipline-and-beyond years, but there you have it. Another square.

I will never forget the first time I heard that album. Just fucking blazed out of my gourd. It was pretty mindblowing.

If I was to partake in something like this stuff I would enjoy more than usual would fall under the Weird America genre we talked about in an earlier thread.

Giant Sand - Is All Over the Map and most of their (his) catalog
Lambchop - Mr. M, Nixon, Is a Woman
Bill Callahan - Apocolypse
Theodore and Water Liars releases
All the Richard Buckner I've listened to

In addition:
Neil Young - Ditch Trilogy especially Tonight's the Night
Centro-Matic - Love You Just the Same, Duel Hawks, Fort Recovery
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Damien Jurado - Maraqopa
Thanks to Dime, I revisited John Murry's The Graceless Age and it works

Here are some of my fave records to listen to with my mind and mood altered. It doesn't necessarily have to be altered by a drug.

Echo and The Bunnymen -- Heaven Up Here
Kyuss -- Welcome to Sky Valley
Husker Du -- Zen Arcade
Centro-matic -- Fort Recovery
King Crimson -- Red
Pink Floyd -- Piper at The Gates of Dawn
Opeth -- Ghost Reveries
The Grateful Dead -- Aoxomoxoa
Led Zeppelin -- Zoso
Deaf Heaven -- Sunbather -- this is a brand new record that came out in June.
I have nowhere else to go. There is no demand in the priesthood for elderly drug addicts
