Artist of the Week 4/14/13 (Silver Jews)

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Some beautiful and brilliant souls just can't handle this shitty place.

I hope you are at peace, David Berman. You made the world smarter, better, kinder and more beautiful for so many.
His facial expression is terrifying. He's basically the equine Chucky.

Fuck I’m listening to “Candy Jail” with tears streaming down my face. This song has no right to work as well as it does. No one else could’ve made it work at all. Singular, beautiful, and talented. We lost a real one.

Cooley D is in fifth grade now and they have a thing called "Mixtape Mondays" where each student picks three songs to add to the class playlist. So I pick him up from school and he can't wait to tell me about his choices: first up was DBT's "Little Pony & Great Big Horse" (perfect choice son!), second was "Smith & Jones Forever" (alright alright alright, he's destined to be the cool kid and anything bad will probably fly right over the kids' heads) but his third selection was "Punks in the Beerlight" now I just imagine a class full of fifth graders asking what it means to "smoke the gel off a fentanyl patch" :o

can't decide whether #parentingfail or #parentingwin. Fuck it, potential parent-teacher conferences notwithstanding I'm counting this as a win

Cooley was destined to be a cool kid but that 5th grade setlist cinches it.

I think I liked the Carpenters in the fucking 5th grade.

Thanks for sharing. Well done by Drag City.

This part was helpful to read.
Some of his incredible turns of phrase seem to have been written for this awful moment. But know that they weren't. They were written in lieu of this moment, to replace this moment, showing the world (and himself) that maybe he didn't truly know what was going to happen next.
It's been tough to listen to some of the songs on the PM record in a post-DCB world. In "That's Just The Way That I Feel," I used to focus more intently on "A setback can be a setup/For a comeback if you don't let up." Now, I'm hyper-aware of "But this kind of hurting won't heal."

It's going to be hard to separate some of these songs from what happened last week, but it's good to know that the people who knew him would ask us to try to do just that.

There's a David Berman interview in the newest Perfect Sound Forever. The link is below.
