I thought of them earlier when I mentioned 16 Horsepower, which put me in mind of Jim White's Searching For the Wrong-Eyed Jesus documentary which includes music from both those bands as well as the Handsome Family and others that would fit the bill. Since The Moaners broke up Melissa Swingle has formed a new band called The Swinglers. Hopefully an album isn't too far off. She's back to doing Trailer Bride tunes again, which is music to my ears.
I was reluctant to mention Hank 3, but some of his shit definitely fits. The bonus disc to "Straight to Hell" is as weirdo as it gets, as is the Guttertown album/bonus disc.
That said, it appears there are ever more sub-divisions within this incredibly limiting and exclusive sub-genre of a larger genre that is difficult to define in the first place. You have the Drag City crew, the Bloodshot Records crew, and the Searching For Wrong-Eyed Jesus crew (Jim White, The Handsome Family, and 16 Horsepower). I sure we can divide the atom further.

Good call.
Love, hate, or indifferent, he's got weirdo shit pegged.

Trailer Bride belong to Bloodshot, too.
I guess Freakwater & Giant Sand would be considered forefathers of the genre... wouldn't have to stretch too far to call Neil Young the "godfather" of this, either.
This has gone absolutely off the rails compared to my original idea (partially of my own volition) but I can't really argue with it.

also just got turned onto Reverend Glasseye - a definite fit. Slim Cessna's Auto Club & Icanlickanysonuvabitchinthehouse or whatever should be included.
I forgot all about the National Lights The Dead Will Walk, Dear. I got obsessed with that album back in the 9B days... definitely weirdo fringe. Disturbing.
So, this was on MTV back in '87 and probably disqualifies for the "fringe" part of it, but the purdy girl spitting at the the start, and some country stuff going on we should be there by approx 67%. I don't know how this holds up around here, but Lone Justice was one of my early encounters with the CountryRockAmericanaAltCountryRoots thing and even if this is not with the original band from the album I still enjoy...

Mmmmmm.... Maria McKee. Probably my first alt-country crush - beating Margo Timmins by a couple of years. I still love that first lone justice record. (But I don't think the keepers of the thread will let her slip in as either weirdo or fringe).
^^^^ Well, I agree. Neither weirdo nor fringe. But, Hiss Golden Messenger, someone posted (maybe that was you) I really don't think is weird. Maybe it'a because I'm weird... Still confused, but at a higher level...
Definitely not "fringe" or "weirdo" but I believe Lone Justice (as well as many other bands from that era) are perfectly in line with "alt.country" even though that name had yet to come into vogue. On the other hand, a case could probably be made for Cowboy Junkies fitting into the fringes of alt.country.

Yes that was me. But it's already been decided (Cortez of course) that HGM is fringe but not weirdo and therefore ineligible for this thread.
I guess the best way to get under Clams' skin is to question whether or not an album he's been listening to less than two weeks fits a very specific, limiting, narrow sub-genre. I'll make a note of that on my 'spreadsheet', "of course."
