Woke up this morning to find that the new album is available for me to download since I contributed to the Pledge Music fund. Haven't had a chance to download and listen yet, but hoping to tonight.

Yep me too but I'm traveling and I have my work laptop with me and would rather put it on my MacBook. Might not be able to wait though. Could always move it over.rlipps wrote:Woke up this morning to find that the new album is available for me to download since I contributed to the Pledge Music fund. Re: AOTW 3/25/13 John Moreland
NYTimes too. He's blowing up!
Re: AOTW 3/25/13 John Moreland
Saw John Moreland for the first time last night, and man, he didn't disappoint. He played at Willie's Locally Known, which is a BBQ joint/music venue and there ended up being around 50 people there if I had to guess. The crowd was surprisingly respectful, which isn't normal for an acoustic show in Lexington, but that probably had something to do with seemingly everyone there already being fans of his work. John has mentioned several times that he lived in the Northern KY area until he was 10, so he had his cousin and her husband there and he dedicated God's Medicine to her. His mom was also there working the merch table.
Overall, I was blown away by the show. He had such a presence and command of that tiny room and people were hanging on every word. He didn't say a lot onstage, but he was very funny when he did, in a deadpan kind of way. Saw several local Lexington musicians there, including Justin Wells of Fifth on the Floor. Had 2 openers, both locals. Egon Danielson went first and I enjoyed him quite a bit. Doc Feldman went next, and I was kinda bored by his set, although I did find out he is a friend and frequent collaborator of 3DD's own JJ (Wooden Wand).
Was able to pick up a copy of Earthbound Blues on vinyl after the show and just briefly spoke with John. I did ask if he'd be at the Holiday Hangout again and he emphatically said yes. He even mentioned that he'd already told his booking agent to block off those dates so he wouldn't have any scheduling issues. Here's the setlist:
Hang Me in the Tulsa County Stars
Blacklist
New Song (Woe is Me Emergency?)
Your Spell
New Song
Heart's Too Heavy
American Flags in Black and White
Sad Baptist Rain
Cleveland County Blues
God's Medicine
I Need You To Tell Me Who I Am
Break My Heart Sweetly
Oh Julia
Cherokee
You Don't Care For Me Enough To Cry
Nobody Gives a Damn About Songs Anymore

I was there, too! Wish I'd known you were there, we could have had a drink. I was sitting over by the merch table, right up front, sitting with my wife (prettiest blonde in the room!) and Doc's "entourage."
Totally agree with your review of John's set. My wife and I are famous for the "Irish goodbye," and I warned Doc after he played that we'd probably be skipping out before John's set was over, but as soon as that dude started playing, we weren't going anywhere. What a voice! Was also sorta spellbound by how he was able to get such a good sound out of that guitar despite using only his thumb and his first finger to fingerpick - color me jealous of that particular skill. Heavy Springsteen vibe on the more rockin' tunes, which is fine by me. For every lyric that made me wish he didn't rely so much on Alt Country Cliches (what can I say, I'm a "word person," and I do tire of hearing endless variations on 'devil,' 'whiskey,' highway,' etc), the very next line he'd sing would redeem it tenfold, which makes me think he's only going to get better with time. Anyway, I'm a convert - this guy is really good. Bought all 3 CDs and, needless to say, actually stayed till the end of a Willie's show for once.
Sorry you didn't dig Doc! I know he was wrestling with a rented guitar, which may have messed with the flow of his set, but he may also just not be your thing. I may be a bit biased, but I think he's terrific. You should check out his album.

I wish he would add some songs from Everything the Hard Way to his set. And I highly recommend you buy that album. I believe it is only available via download.

The Sad, Sweet Songs of Oklahoma’s John Moreland
Singer-songwriter John Moreland is appearing this summer with Dawes, Jason Isbell and Patty Griffin
By STEVE DOUGHERTY
June 30, 2015 12:30 p.m. ET
As he introduced a tune titled “You Don’t Care For Me Enough to Cry” at a recent New York City club date, Oklahoma singer and songwriter John Moreland told the audience something he’d learned about the song: “It’s too sad for Dallas-Fort Worth morning television.”
“They were like ‘Whoa, that song’s a bummer,’” Mr. Moreland says later. After some back and forth between his management and the station, Mr. Moreland’s appearance was canceled by mutual consent. “I didn’t want to get up at 5 a.m. anyway,” he says...

Re: AOTW 3/25/13 John Moreland
I've been listening to his work with the Black Gold Band a LOT lately, and frankly I think it's his best sound. His best songs are stronger on the recent albums, but they do tend to blur a little bit sonically. Combine his current songwriter chops with the energy and pulse of that stuff, and watch the fuck out.
Re: AOTW 3/25/13 John Moreland
This is the kind of stuff that keeps me real interested in JM. I love what he's currently doing but am also looking forward to when he feels the itch to change it up in the future. When that happens he's got a lot of tools and experience to draw on and it's gonna be great.Iowan wrote:I've been listening to his work with the Black Gold Band a LOT lately, and frankly I think it's his best sound. On first listen... the BGB stuff is definitely more accessible. Not saying it's better, but certainly easier to listen to.Beebs wrote:This is the kind of stuff that keeps me real interested in JM. Very pleased to see John Moreland's coming over as the support act for Jason Isbell's European tour next January.

Indeed. They kick off the Euro tour in Oslo on January 6th if I got it right. No ticks for sale yet for that particular event, but I am definitely in for this.dogstar wrote:Very pleased to see John Moreland's coming over as the support act for Jason Isbell's European tour next January.

Re: AOTW 3/25/13 John Moreland
Been listening to a ton of this since purchasing a few albums.
I love" everything the hard way" with the dust bowl souls. Really great rockers on here. Love "Low", "holy ghost haunted" and Christmas lights.
In the Throes is prolly my next fave album. Slower stuff here, but well done slower stuff. True some of it blends together, but holy smokes good tunes. Loving "blacklist'" and "359am". But all are certainly worth a listen.
I would like to hear him toss out a few rockers in the vein of "everything the hard way". Still a great find. Thanks 3DD

I agree! Everything the Hard Way is my favorite of the albums I have. If he got together a band and uptempo'd the way he did on that album, he'd be a great opener for DBT.drjayhow wrote:Been listening to a ton of this since purchasing a few albums.
