Anticipated Releases
Couldn't find anything like this on 3dd yet, so here goes.
What upcoming records or projects are on your radar? I'm thinking about records that are in the can and have a release date but go ahead and talk about less defined stuff as well.
I'm really looking forward to the new Alejandro Escovedo, Street Songs of Love, due out 6/29. Escovedo described it as a "band album" and I'm really digging the single I've heard on the radio. I guess Springsteen guest vocals on it also?

Re: Anticipated Releases
I can't wait for the new Justin Townes Earle album. Isbell plays a bunch of guitar on it, apparently.
ain't no static on the gospel radio
Re: Anticipated Releases
Also looking forward to the new Alejandro.
Very excited about the at-long-last official release of the Sparklehorse/Danger Mouse Dark Night of the Soul LP.
Of course the Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows John Prine tribute with DBT et. al. (is that out yet?).
And have you guys seen the obscene amount of vinyl reissues that are flooding out this summer? Double Nickels on the Dime, the first two Nationals albums, The Vibrators, and an ungodly amount of jazz.

Are you saying that record companies are sensing a trend on which they can make oodles of money w/out working or thinking? How can that be?

In addition to Isbell, Brian Owings on drums !
Great drummer from Alabama who has played with Delbert McClinton, Topper Price, The Decoys and other regional favorites.

Broken Hearts Dirty Windows is due out on June 22.
Not forever, just for now.

No, not just putting out the same crap again, but going back to the original master tapes and putting out remastered all-analog versions that often sound better than the original, and usually with an extra song or two.
Not in every case--there is certainly a pile of slap-dash vinyl flooding the market--but some of these reissues are really like hearing the album for the first time. (Case in point is the DBT vinyl.)

Interesting, surprising response, Scotto. Record companies mining their catalog to sell us again what they've already sold us, and by definition sold us inferior versions of, doesn't seem to me to be cause for celebration. I'm not talking about the occasionally valuable archival exercise where new material is discovered or old material is presented in new, thoughtful ways. But hey, they're your ears and it's your money so go wild

concur.
also (I think its just been released) I am totally all over the new Devo record.
I've never taken a pissbreak during a DBT show but if I had it would have been during Dancing Ricky.

As an At The Drive In fan who has never really been able to get into the Mars Volta, what should I listen to that might change this?

I was pretty late to the party and am most familiar with their last album, Relationship of Command.
Spectacular piece of work that's been on many of my "best of" lists for 10 years running.

Re: Anticipated Releases
Alejandro is one I have been looking forward to a great deal since I heard a bunch of the new stuff live a few months back.
Reviews don't seem great, and I think I'll wait til I can take it with me before I listen to it.

That's good.
I had read others (The Guardian sticks out) that had said it was really good and professional, but that nothing really stood out. Like I said, though, I loved the new stuff live. This Bed Is Getting Crowded, especially.

Re: Anticipated Releases
can't wait to hear this song
THEY’RE GONE NOW
diggin through my scrapbook
sometimes feels almost like diggin graves
all these funny faces
I loved them once but no one ever stays
they’re gone now
some are dead some are singing
in the homeless shelter choir
they’re gone now
we used to be best friends
we’d tell each other lies for hours
but they’re gone now
some are dead some are serving time
down in county jail
but they’re gone now
most of them wouldn’t know my name
or else they wouldn’t tell
but they’re gone now
swallowed by the ocean maybe burned up in a fire
but they’re gone now
just photos on my wall
that I sometimes still admire
but they’re gone now
I never knew too many of em too long anyhow
but they’re gone now
wonder how I met em and I wonder what I said to em
gone now
some are dead some are married living somewhere in L.A.
but they’re gone now
either way these days they don’t have very much to say
but they’re gone now
some laid out in cemeteries
nice neat little rows
but they’re gone now
why they’re dead and I’m still living
that’s the secret bleeding roses
on those graves won’t let me know

but they’re gone now
