A somewhat different and new to me take on Springsteen (and who knew there could be such a thing at this late date?) You may not be surprised to know that it resonates w/ me like the last chord of "Day in the Life". Yes a reference to Springsteen's catalog would be more appropriate there but I got nothing at this moment. OTOH you could thank me for not going the harmonica as shofar route.

Rumor has it that E St is in studio with the Boss. I hope it does not result in another Working On A Dream.

Need some help from the musos here. I heard a studio version of Bruce doing the Dylan song I Want You on the radio this morning.

I know there are several bootlegs of Springsteen doing this song live but does anyone know where the studio version comes from?

Thanks.

Same. I've never heard a studio version before. Have heard a few live versions - mainly from 1974-75 shows.

Here's a bunch of things I love about the new Springsteen record

-50 year old songs that sound brand new
-Bruce has dropped the twang voice
-Harmonica!
-Songs about loss - reflecting on it and how to move forward from it.  Applicable to Bruce, the E Street Band, also DBT, and of course all of us
-The guitar solos on Burning Train!
-It's just the E Street Band - no strings, no backup singers, no horns, no orchestras - just the band, and they sound amazing
-No cowboy songs, no ridiculous cowboy photos
-No stupid songs (i.e., Queen of the Supermarket)
-The whole band sounds amazing but especially Roy's piano, Max's drums and Bruce's telecaster
-Ghosts is just incredible
-Classic E Street sound
-You can hear My Back Pages in Song for Orphans

The new album is fantastic. I really like it. And I agree with Clams assessment.

I didn't know what to expect. His last few releases have been a mixed bag. It's an even-keel type of record, one you listen to front-to-back.

I agree with everything Clams said, except for the bit about the cowboy songs as I really enjoyed Western Stars. What a wonderful collection of songs that sound as E Street as it gets! This was certainly unexpected.

There are two three song runs on this record that I believe are as good as any run of songs put out in the modern era of the E Street Band: Burnin’ Train->Janey Needs a Shooter->Last Man Standing and Rainmaker->If I Was The Priest->Ghosts. One Minute You’re Here and I’ll See You in My Dreams are also very nice little songs.

I was fine walking away from Pittsburgh 9-11-16 knowing it was probably my last E Street show (because it was an incredible summational show and I’m over the nostalgia type touring from him) but god damn I want a show centered around this material so bad. These songs will all play over very well in the live setting.

There really is something to be said about getting the ESB together and making it all about them. No studio fuckery, no extraneous musicians or instruments. Can you imagine what some of the poorly produced records (Magic, Lucky Town) would sound like given the ESB/production like this??!

"We're getting our plans for touring together. We'll be out there. We hoped to be out there this year but I just didn't have confidence or want to take the risk for my audience that it was going to be OK. We put if off a little while. But we're working on plans to get it all together now, so you'll be seeing the E Street Band pretty soon."

I can’t wait for this announcement. I’ve been committed to going to any WI & CA shows (at minimum) for what feels like forever and now I’m starting to feel like shows will finally happen.

I saw a fantastic show on the River tour a few years ago. Over 3.5 hours. Bruce must've been hitting the coffee hard in Seattle, haha. I'd probably go to this tour but I'm good if I leave it at that. When I saw Bruce at the beginning of the original Darkness tour (I was in high school) it was a life changing show. I saw him at the end of that tour, too.

I saw a great show on the River tour in 2016 in Milwaukee, as well. That was finally my first time seeing him and I want more.

I've seen Bruce numerous times from BITUSA forward. It's not the same anymore. I mean, it's good, but I would rather remember the rocking shows rather than hear he and the band play everything at a slow-as-molasses tempo because they are so fucking old. They were a better touring unit when Max Weinberg's sun subbed behind the drums, he kept those geriatric fuckers moving!

I’m thankful for all the copious tapes and archival releases to get my fix of that stuff. I mean, I still want to see him as much as I can but I’m not throwing on any concert recording at least post-Devils & Dust. In short, mostly envious of anyone who was fortunate enough to see them back in the day. However, my dream is that there ends up being a Tunnel of Love small venue run at some point like he did with The River, because I think it’d be incredible.

One of the few advantages of being old:

December, 1974 The Music Hall, Boston Oh. So that's what the fuss is about.
March, 1977 The Music Hall, Boston One of the two greatest shows I ever saw until a couple of DBT shows. Please don't ask me to pick.
? 1980 Madison Square Garden The Boss moves to the big[ger] stage and does it like nobody has ever done it before. One of the two greatest shows I ever saw until a couple of DBT shows. Please don't ask me to pick.
Over 50 shows since then in all kinds of formats in all kinds of venues in all kinds of places (East Coast USA, anyway).
