This ended up being the title track to an album the Earl Scruggs Revue released in 1980. This particular version was filmed at Carlton Haney's Camp Springs festival in Reidsville, NC in 1971 (per one of the comments on YouTube). Though I was familiar with Earl from Flatt and Scruggs and their appearances on shows like The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and the soundtrack to Bonnie & Clyde, it was Live! From Austin City Limits that served as my proper introduction to Earl and his work with the Earl Scruggs Revue. He wasn't afraid to add drums to the bluegrass mix, a huge no-no to bluegrass purists. He also wasn't opposed to covering the works of Dylan, the Byrds, Guy Clark, Rod Stewart, Elton John and others. Unfortunately, a good portion of the Earl Scruggs Revue discography remained out of print on CD for a long time. Thankfully, the Wounded Bird label has released a lot of their albums on CD for the first time. That said, some of their albums remain out of print. The Earl Scruggs Revue was a real eye (and ear) opener to me as far as what could be done within what seemed like the relatively restrictive world of bluegrass. Much to his credit, Earl was never afraid to break down those boundaries.

Though I was blessed with some decent radio stations in my neck of the woods in eastern NC back in the 80's, the programs that featured new music weren't all that adventurous (though there were exceptions). Around 1989, an employee of Alert Cable TV moved to our neighborhood. Upon learning there was no cable service that far out in the boonies, he set about making it happen. Boom! We had cable, even though some surrounding areas remained without it up until just the past few years. It wasn't as though I'd never seen cable or MTV before but one of the first programs I recall seeing was I.R.S. Records Presents the Cutting Edge. Unfortunately, it was the last episode. Then, there was 120 Minutes. Though it could be hit or miss, I would set the timer on my VCR to record it every Sunday night. At least that left me the option of being able to fast forward if I wanted to. This is a vintage episode from 1988.

Hosted by Kevin Seal with Dave Kendall providing the record reviews, featuring these videos:

Felt - Primitive Painters / Screaming Blue Messiahs - I Wanna Be a Flintstone / XTC - Dear God
Paul Kelly & the Messengers - Before Too Long / Guadalcanal Diary - Litany (Life Goes On)
The Bolshoi - TV Man / Howard DeVoto - Rainy Season / The Silos - Tennessee Fire
The Cucumbers - My Boyfriend / Kommunity FK - Something Inside Me Has Died / Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion
Richard Lloyd - Fire Engine / Game Theory - The Real Sheila / The Smiths - Sheila Take a Bow

Had to remove The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, They Might Be Giants, the Pogues, Killing Joke,
The Jesus & Mary Chain, the Replacements, Bryan Ferry and R.E.M. for copyright reasons.

Unfortunately, the Morrissey News was accidentally taped over back in 1988.

Old 8mm footage of day prior and day of outdoor music festival on Steiner Ranch near Lake Austin & Mansfield Dam on Sept 5th 1976. Bands were The Band, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller. Beginning motocycle footage was prior to weekend of show and on the start of reel. Even with 94 degree heat beating down on us it still was the place to be that day for music.

I heard an epic live version of this song on a local station recently, still trying to track that down.
