I was just tipped off to this artist thanks to the Cult of Record Bar page on Facebook, looking forward to checking out more songs. This is the title track from their debut record that came out in 2014 in their native Norway, looks like it was released in the U.S. earlier this year.

Never heard of them before. Will have to check out more. Thanks for the heads up. (I think I recognize that bar though)

This is from a single that came out earlier this year. These guys also have an EP that you can check out here. Description below from their Facebook page.

Patsy's Rats are a rotating cast of rascals out of Portland, OR playing raucous guitar pop led by Patsy Gelb and Christian Blunda. Christian is the leader of party punk band Mean Jeans and Patsy is the former bass & vocalist of sludge-pop group Scavenger Cunt and occasional collaborator of her father, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand. The Rats craft genuine bedroom pop tunes and then crunch 'em all up with 70's rock & roll power.

The debut record from the Flat Five has been getting a lot of buzz elsewhere but I'm not sure that I've seen anyone mention it here.

The Flat Five is a Chicago-based pop vocal super-group — Kelly Hogan, Nora O’Connor, Scott Ligon, Casey McDonough, Alex Hall — five in-demand musicians who individually spend much of their time touring and recording with bands like Neko Case, NRBQ, The Decemberists, Andrew Bird, Mavis Staples, Iron and Wine, Jakob Dylan, Robbie Fulks, Alejandro Escovedo, The New Pornographers, and many other heavy hitters. These five folks stay very, very busy. Yet for the past ten years, these shameless harmony junkies would come together, like a moth to a porchlight, to make music as The Flat Five. Purely for the love of singing together. For the mother-effing fun of it.

More on the Flat Five here.

A friend recently told me that Samantha Crain's new record is "weird", which was not meant as a put down. This is the only track I've heard from it. While I wouldn't necessarily describe it as weird, I will say it's a bit of a departure from what she's done in the past but that said, she has tried on several different musical hats from straight up folk to indie-oriented rock n' roll. I'd say this track finds her more in a pop frame of mind. The video itself might be described as weird as it has some obvious dark elements and even a few moments I'd describe as grotesque. This is from her new album, You Had Me At Goodbye which is out on March 24.

While I'll admit that that the synth aspect of Sylvan Esso has never particularly grabbed me, I have always been enamored of the sheer power of Amelia Meath's voice, which is obviously sort of the juxtaposition in Sylvan Esso and a huge part of what makes their sound work. In these new sessions, which just so happen to feature some of my favorite local musicians, they expand into a full band (as opposed to a duo). Videos from the sessions will be debuted by NPR Music each day this week.

Some really great local to me NJ/NY/PA bands. I've seen most of them in person and thoroughly enjoyed the music.

I have not been able to keep up with new releases like I use to so probably my favorite discovery from this year is not even from this year, Alvvays. Someone posted their song "Archie, Marry Me" in a Power Pop group I belong to on FB where almost everything (including this song) is shot down by the so called "Power Pop Police" for not being Power Pop. However, I'm not trying to make the case one way or the other as to whether this song is Power Pop or not, I just know that I love it and pretty much everything else I've heard from Alvvays. I have friends that are fans and have been aware of them for the past several years but never checked them out. Better late than never.

From 2021. Emily Scott Robinson is a new artist I discovered thanks to the new Oxford American Southern Music Sampler CD. American Sirens, her latest album, has been receiving lots of accolades as of late. If it is any consolation, she is signed to John Prine's Oh Boy Records. I haven't heard the entire album but what I have heard, I have loved.

Also from 2021. I see that some of you are fans of Margo Cilker. I was prompted to seek her out after seeing an article about her in Uncut magazine. Like Emily, I have not heard her entire new record but what I have heard, I've loved.

A friend also recently recommended the Craig Brown Band and TK & The Holy Know-Nothings. I haven't heard that much by either artist but what I have heard, I've liked.

Thank you. I also forgot to mention Snail Mail. I have also liked what I've heard from the latest albums by Lilly Hiatt, Courtney Barnett, and Aaron Lee Tasjan.

I also liked this. When I first heard the song I hoped that meant it was the first single from a new album from both of them. Unfortunately, that didn't turn out to be the case. Perhaps someday it will.

The first single from Angel Olsen's new album Big Time which is out on June 3rd. I'm not sure if this is indicative of the entire record but this song has a bit of a country sound to it.

Not just one recommendation, but several of them. I'm familiar with quite a few of these folks while some are completely new to me. Since reading this I've been digging into them and have liked all that I've heard so far.

Great list. Surprised to not see Zach Bryan on it, though maybe he’s kind of too big for a list like that but too small to be a big star yet. Have heard of a lot of these artists through Grady Smith’s YouTube channel.
