always liked what I've heard of Frog Holler, I have Adams Hotel Road

Rumor has it that when Neil does eventually play out west it will not be solo like the upcoming shows. Comes from a good source but he doesn't know what the supposed lineup might be.

Next up for me is Elvis Costello and the Imposters in Reno tomorrow night

Going to check out the Besnard Lakes on Cain's second stage this Friday night. I'm pumped. It's not often that Canadian indie bands of that caliber make a stop in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I don't think I dislike actual Neil Young fans.

I do however dislike the "It's hip to like Neil Young so I'm gonna go to the show and yell "I love You Neil!" all fucking night and sing at the top of my lungs to Cinnamon girl" fans. He played a really sparse and spooky CTK solo electric and most of the folks sitting around me figured it was a good time to go get a beer or chat about work.

Great show. Most annoying crowd I have ever experienced. Ever.

I saw them at SXSW and didn't care for them. I was suprised because I figured I would like them from what I had read.

Either DBT/Tarrytown or Jay Farrar (Maxwells) June 4
The Ramble June 5
Bonnaroo June 10-12
Reigning Sound June 20 (Maxwells)
Stanton Moore July 8 (Maxwells)
DBT July 23 (9:30 Club) **70% sure
Black Keys Central Park July 27/28
Jim James/Williamsburg, Brooklyn July 30
Mile High Festival (Denver) (only Sunday to see MMJ and DBT) August 15 (*** MAYBE)
My Morning Jacket (Philly) August 29

i really don't want to add anything else...all my budget can afford....HOWEVER, ya never know....See ya'll at some of these maybe :D

Only 3 so far in order to save money, but:

DBT- Tarrytown (June 4)
The New Pornographers- NYC (June 19)
The Hold Steady/The Gaslight Anthem/The Whigs- Detroit (July 15)

I wanted to see the Dexateens and Jay Farrar but they're both 21+. I've decided against seeing the Black Keys this time around cuz of the $ thing but I've already seen them 3 times so it's OK.

schubas: thursday may 20
was going to see the dexateens for the 2nd time ( saw them last year , same venue)
the only album i had was singlewide. so gave that a few spins a day or two preshow.
good album. a few stand out tracks.
a little mellower than i imagined? recalled from the last show.
anyway
i see they are the openers for jessica lea mayfield, whom i had never heard of before.
so i download her album and am completely transfixed. can't shake her voice and lyrics. stunning. weathered. beautiful.

i was really looking forward to seeing this show....
fast forward to thursday night
the stage at schubas in small. not more than 15 feet across and no more than 10 feet deep
dexateens come out firing...and never look back
jesus, it is impossible to not nod your head and smile watching these cats.
after a few sweat soaked songs, a few thoughts come to my mind
1. christ, dime in the gutter must be more of a rocker than i pictured.
this was some hard core , rock and roll.country punk rock.serious.
2.the last time i saw them,
there was another singer not just the curly hair guy ( elliot)
this time the little football manchild was burning shit up fierce.
boots stompin', throwin his head, screamin', hollerin'. madness
3.the bass player looked stoned but happy.
4.the new guitarist looks like david bazan.
and it was the drummers birthday.
5. i also wanted to know how the hell tehy did not kill each other with their guitars.
they were crashing into each other, swinging the guitars like mad.
i kept waiting for a smashed forehead.
crazy. top notch full throttle for the entire hour. barely stopped to breath.

during the break i talked to the merch girl.
the only music they had was singlewide and hardwire healing.
and then these really cool birdhouses made out of alabama license plates.

i have already written enough about jessica lea in about 5 other threads in the last 3 days.
i am a fangirl
really incredible performance.

after the show, i ran into the drummer near the bathrooms.
we got to talking about albums and how much harder they were rocking as opposed to last time
real nice guy.
dime, i told him what a huge fan you are and how you work to convert everyone on ninebullets to the power of the dexateens
i mentioned teenager. ( as i have seen you and cortez the killer play it. he said he did not even have a copy of that.! (?)
he said personally, the self titled album was his favorite, except for ( wait for it dime) the new one!!! coming out late summer early fall.

after the show, i bought a birdhouse and the mayfield EP.
today, i ordered the selft itled and teenager off amazon.
dexateens really know how to throw it down.
i am not really much of a rocker. i don't usually do fast and loud,
on occasion i will...
but i am getting old and the mellow stuff sits a little better,
but last night i felt like a kid again.
great show. lucky me.

ps: i asked elliot to sign the birdhouse, because it was a piece of art.
he thought for a minute, signed his name and something else.i could not read it.
i thought it was r +r ( rock and roll)
later i was informed it was roll tide roll) well alright. right?

just got home from the show. It was pretty good, albeit a little short when youve got two albums out but you play 10 songs that's a little curious. However, I felt they were pretty good live. They don't sound too much different live than their studio stuff, but then again I really like their studio albums. They've got a couple of guys that can hold their own on the guitar.

A review from Saturday's Vic Chesnutt Tribute.
It's kind of difficult to find the words to string together.
Lots of kind pure words for a man truly missed.
Rock Funeral.
A song from will johnson about Vic.
I was in line at the bar behind Brent, (surprised?!) and a man wandered up to me and asked, "did the guy kill himself?"
all I could manage was "we're here to celebrate him. how he lived. not how he died" we toasted and I took my seat again.
powerful night.

so...haven't posted in here for a couple of weeks, and I've been to a few shows since then. A short recap:

14/5. Went to see Swedish rock band Dundertåget. Dundertåget is led by former Hellacopters guitarist Robert "Strings" Dahlqvist and used to be called Thunder Express before they started singing in Swedish. I've seen them a couple of times since they're from this city and often play around here (and it's usually cheap). First band on the bill was Thee Attacks from Denmark. They're a pretty new (first album released in April) and their thing is pretty much doing slightly more modern version of '60s The Who. As songwriters they're kinda unoriginal but they're great live and seemed to have a lot of fun, I talked a bit with the singer and drummer after the show too, very nice guys. After them it was Heavy Trash, with Jon Spencer, who apparently is quite famous (or used to be at least) in rockabilly circles... They were good, but not my thing, and not good enough for me to really get into it. Last out was Dundertåget who as usual were very good live, but their songs aren't really all that strong. Still definitely enjoyable though.

22/5. The King Khan & BBQ + The Black Lips + The Almighty Defenders
King Khan & BBQ went first, very good set and since it's quite short it was basically limited to their good stuff, and they didn't play much from their latest lp (which is easily their weakest). They're great live and BBQ, aka Mark Sultan, is one of the most impressive singers I've seen...insanely talented. Black Lips were up next and they were obviously the reason most people were their, and they played great. They seemed to enjoy themselves and played a 40 minute, high-energy set with mostly songs from Let It Bloom, Good Bad Not Evil and some from their newest album 200 Million Thousand (which overall was a disappointing album, but the highs were high, and those were what they played). The Almighty Defenders were kinda fun and they looked like they had fun, but despite how good they were live their songs aren't good, except for Bow Down Or Die and Cone of Light.

24/5 Release party for Imperial State Electric. Imperial State Electric is former Hellacopters singer, guitarist and main songwriter Nicke Andersson's solo project. Musically it's kinda similar to The Hellacopters later work but with more power pop and influences from other genres. The show was free and featured a live gig by Imperial State Electric, which live is Nicke and Dolf De Borst from The Datsuns plus a drummer and a second guitarist who I don't know the names of. Anyway, it was a great gig and Nicke Andersson is despite his distaste for touring and excellent live performer and he seemed to have a good time...they played most of the songs from the new album plus a bunch of covers, including The Beatles' You Can't Do That and a couple of soul covers...

tomorrow it's Dinosaur Jr. and Built to Spill :D

Peter Wolf was just terrific last nite. A very special nite.

First time I'd seen a concert at the Wilbur Theater, formerly a theater for "straight" plays, now a multi use venue where they take out the seats in the front of the orchestra and put in tables w/ bar service. I was a little surprised that my table was the front row :)

It was a homecoming show and Peter and the band were clearly having a great time. Duke Levine is a seriously GREAT guitar player and the band was excellent and really tight. Peter gave shout outs to pretty much everyone in the boston phone book, or at least the "musicians" section of the yellow pages. Other shout outs included muddy waters, otis spann & james cotton; van morrison; merle haggard, neko case & shelby lynne (collaborators on the current album); the late great Willy DeVille; and faye dunaway. Going into the men's room before the show, saw a guy coming out that i knew i should know but couldn't place. Turned out it was danny klein, the J Geils bass player (who got a shout out, of course, and a big hand).

Plenty of the new material of course, plus a smattering from his older solo albums and a couple of geils tunes. Wolf was in great form in all respects but the stories he told were especially fun. Several of the songs really hit home in a personal, intimate way, especially because Wolf's singing was so emotional, soulful and dead on.
