Who's Everyone Seeing Live?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

Saw James McMurtry last night and what struck me is that while you know the songs are great it can easily forgotten how damned good his band is and frankly how good a guitar player McMurtry is. I have never been disappointed seeing them live.

Jonny Burke was really good. His lyrics of the downtrodden were clever and deeper than could really be appreciated live. I'm definitely going to spend some time with his music.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Just got some tickets for Matthew Sweet with Tommy Keene opening in August. Lucky! Got good seats. There weren't many left. Have liked Matthew's stuff for a long time.

Have a chance to see Megadeath next week. VIP box seats in outdoor amphitheater. Never been a huge fan of that type of music, but feel like maybe I should go. Yes?

Guns N’ Roses, Slane Castle, Slane, Co. Meath, Ireland May 27th, 2017.

The Original Guns N’ Roses played Slane Castle 25 years ago. It’s a venue in beautiful countryside located in Co. Meath. The venue is a natural bowl shaped area where the stage is down by the bottom of a bowl/ hill - by the river Boyne, and there is a ‘Castle’ (a 17th century stately home in the shape of a castle looking down on the crowd and band. Slane’s been hosting rock bands since the early 80s and had a record breaking crowd for Bruce Springsteen of 110,000 people in 1985 (it was by far Bruce’s biggest crowd to date and in those days there was no crowd pit barrier and the crowd crushes and sways gave Bruce heart palpitations during the first half of the concert)!

I’d seen G n’ R twenty five years earlier in 1992, in Wembley Foodball Stadium, London, and it was a fantastic concert and performance. I got tickets to that Wembley show because I had seen the band on TV pretty much steal the show at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert (also in Wembley Stadium) two months earlier. They just seemed to fill the stadium with power and stage presence that day, with the two songs they performed. I thought these guys look like they’re worth seeing live. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/ ... 92-archive

So 25 years later, my wife got me a surprise ticket to see them again, this time in Ireland, only a half an hour from where I live. 85 thousand people all win the one place for some Rock N’ Roll…

The weather for the week was great, warm and sunny every day, blue skies the day before the concert (25C (78F)) which I can tell you is warm and hot and unusual for Ireland! But this being Ireland, the day of the concert it starts raining at 6am, but it was predicted to stop at 4pm, and it did pretty much stop at 4pm. Now, this venue Slane Castle, is notorious for road and entry blocks both entering and exiting for concerts. I decided to get a shuttle bus from the local town of Navan, and it worked out well, no delays, and we were brought to a local quarry about 20 min walk from the venue. This being Ireland, you’re bound to meet someone you know, and sure enough, on the bus in the seat behind me was a man who was married to my wife’s next door neighbour. He/they would have been at our wedding only for they has their own wedding the day before! So we shared some cans of beer on the bus and all went in to the venue together as new friends! There was big security on the day, this being three days after the Arienne Grande Manchester bombing. In the venue there was massive queues for the beer tents, so it was a case of buy three pints at once and make the best of them. The support that day was a local band of youngsters called Outerkin who went down well apparently, the Mark Lanagan, who didn’t go down well apparently (it appears he wasn’t much bothered himself on the day – and I did think he was a strange choice for a big open air venue – his music is more suited to dark enclosed venues). The final support act were Royal Blood, whom I saw. A heavy music duo of drummer and bass player only. People said they were good, but they’re not my cup of tea, on record and now, live.

So now it was anticipation of the main band, with three members of the original line up back together. Well I have to say they once again were brilliant. Exploding out of the traps with Its So Easy, then Mr. Brownstone, Chinese Democracy and Welcome to the Jungle. With this band the songs take on a life of their own when played live. The songs are visceral, there’s a raw power to the music, it just hit you. The first hour went by in a haze of slam dancing, moshing and the crowd going wild and singing along. They didn’t short change with show length, almost three hours long, and 27 songs. And once again, Guns N’ Roses were stunning live!! Delighted they played Rocket Queen and Out Ta Get Me…

Any of my friends who were there (in other areas not with me) all said it was an amazing gig, fantastic, brilliant. Sometimes with gigs you think they are great, and you get other people who give a, mew, review. But I have to say this was one of the most uniformly greatly reviewed gigs I’ve seen. Also the chat forums I went on didn’t have one person who had a bad word to say about the performance, all thought it was an amazing gig.

My sister who now lives in Boston was at the Wembley Football Stadium gig with me 25 years ago. I told her how good they were in Slane, and a few days later she got tickets for G n’ R’s arena show in Boston in late October…

The post gig buzz gig lasted for over a week or more… a great band live, just like Rock N’ Roll should be!!

That's a Boston and Co. Meath connection!! (Slane often get's referred to as Co. Dublin, but there is (well was Dublin are much better now!) a big rivalry in Gaelic Football between Co. Meath and Co. Dublin. You may (also) hear from her stories of getting out of the car parks etc after the gig. People have Woodstock type tales of cars stuck in the mud, traffic jams for hours getting out of muddy fields ect!) But you saw my opinion on the concert itself... its all about the music, not the post concert mud!

Guess they don't have a following in the Northeast. They headlined for 1200 in Charlotte and sold out in Raleigh last night

Ah its ok, its a half joke that everywhere in Ireland is located to Dublin! Is the project you're working on the Shire Pharma plant by any chance? They're doing the groundworks there at the moment and I drive past it each morning and evening on the way to work. (or is it the Facebook data centre, I also go past that?) http://www.meathchronicle.ie/news/round ... n-ireland/

Not full band, just a really talented multi-instrumentalist accompanying him. It was phenomenal. The guy played keys, guitar, and harmonica and really played off of Moreland's strengths a lot. God damn it, is Moreland convincing. He stuck to the last 4 albums exclusively and played for about 1.5 hours, give or take. Did an encore of "I Need You To Tell Me Who I Am" that crushed. I was glad I saw him, because (and I'm not trying to be an ass) I have concerns about how long he's going to be able to keep touring and his overall health. He's the real deal and anyone who halfway likes his music would be well served to see him now.

Will Johnson was excellent. I've never caught the bug and "got" the whole Centro-Matic/Will Johnson universe, outside of Love You Just the Same. I will be revisiting his body of work after last night.

Codfish Hollow immediately became my favorite venue. It's absolutely in the middle of nowhere, at the end of a dead end road stuck in a remote valley in the Iowa Driftless area, 3-4 hours west of Chicago. You park at the top of the hill, in a cow pasture where you can camp and tailgate. The barn is about a half mile down the lane, which is closed to public traffic other than Marv and his John Deere 4020 which pulls the hay rack you ride to the barn. The barn, which has been renovated and has lots of space to wander, hang out, grab a beer or some grub. Midwestern politeness abounds. The barn is tiny, and hay bales line the edges, serving as make shift bleachers. It gets hot in there. After the show, Marv drives you back up the hill to your the pasture. Magic.

If I find a better "indoor" venue, I'll be in heaven.

Yeah, I'm not trying to be alarmist, or a dick, or anything but there's a reason "morbid" is thrown in front of obesity at that degree. Always go to the show.
