Recently got back from the Orkney Isles where we attended the folk festival they have there. Saw lots of great music but at times it got a bit fiddly diddly for me. The highlights were Imar (who are the current UK folk band of the year) and a band from Quebec called Le Vent Du Nord, both highly recommended.

Coming up I've got Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever tomorrow night.

It was fun and entertaining. I saw Howe Gelb on the Future Standards tour some months ago sitting behind a piano noodling away on his jazz-reportoir. Also very entertaining. This was very different. I do not know the original album that well, but this was a flat out punk-ish three guitar attack, hit-or-miss one string guitar solos over a very energetic rhythm section. Unmistankenly Gelb-ish, and difficult to categorize. I think there was only the drummer from the original line-up, also Thøger Lund who has been with Giant Sand and other Gelb projects for many years, but as I understand it, not that far back. The other musicians were a couple of young musicians, one of them who I believe is the producer of the re-recorded version of Valley of Rain.

He also had his two daughters with him on the tour, one of them was the opening act together with some of the musicians from Giant Sand. They all came on stage towards the end. Sort of like a friends and family gathering. Very loose (and very loud) with some humorous stage banter thrown in here and there.

Tyler Childers and Town Mountain were excellent last night. Caleb Caudle played a great opening set last week. Drivin' n' Cryin'--Kevn Kinney is fucking deaf. Forgot my earplugs. I measured 110db about 20 ft. from the stage and 98db about 80 ft. back. It was really uncomfortable and I lasted about 25 minutes. Couldn't discern any vocals. Little Joe (from Sturgill's band) had his annoyed face on but played some really nice guitar. Very sad.
Always go to the show

Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever a few nights ago. Really enjoyed the show, it was a lot of fun and the band have a lot of energy. The new songs sound great although why they're touring a week before the new record comes out without any to sell strikes me as a bit stupid.

I saw Memphian Steve Selvidge from Bash And Pop, The Hold Steady, etc etc at a little outdoor beer garden kinda spot here in Memphis last night. He played Doug Sahm's 'Mendocino' which made my night.

Tomorrow night it's Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives at Graceland. I believe Johnny Cash's drummer, W.S. Holland is gonna sit in for some tunes.

agreed. i get that they started the tour early to coincide w Coachella and maybe they had no way to push the release date earlier.

Did they bring Charley's horn players out and do a big jam of "Long Hot Summer Day"? I saw them with Charley last summer and they did that. It kicked ass. Charley's a great opener for them.

Trying to see AA on Friday. I have total knee replacement on Monday. We'll see. The folks at the Blind Tiger said they could set me up with some stools, but my wife will make the final decision.

Patterson on Friday in Florence, AL, then I'm coming back to the Memphis area to see David Haught, a buddy of mine from Virginia at Ghost River Brewery I'm Memphis. I'm pretty sure I've promoted David a few times on here, but he's a good singer and guitarist who played Hank Sr a few years ago in a play in Lynchburg.
