Re: Who's Everyone Seeing Live?
McMurtry was terrific last night, and Tim Easton was fantastic in support. I'll need to give him some serious listens going forward. Back to the main event though, this was a full band show and he played roughly 1/2 of Complicated Game. All those songs live were fantastic. Of course he mined the favorites too with an especially poignant Just Us Kids, A rocking Choctaw Bingo, Childish Things and an incredible Lights of Cheyenne. I sometimes forget that McMurtry can rock with the best of them and then go quiet for the prettier, slow songs with equal dexterity. This was one of the best shows I've seen all year and I almost didn't go because Lurleen was out of town. Fortunately I remembered jonicont's catchphrase. Always go to the show indeed.Tequila Cowboy wrote:James McMurtry tonight. It's been a while.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved

Saw Jackie Greene last night at World Café Live in Philly. Excellent show. A solo acoustic singer, Lauren Sherra (sp.?) opened up and she sat in during Jackie's set on vocals for I Shall Be Released. Great show. He is promoting his new album Back to Birth which I picked up from the merch table. The other cover last night was New Speedway Boogie and it absolutely cooked!

Re: Who's Everyone Seeing Live?
last couple of days have been pretty great... two days of Boston Calling (some good stuff, some shit) followed by different shows later that night.
Friday:
Gregory Alan Isakov (pretty decent... morose, brooding alt-folk... riyl eitzel, kozelek and other guys with zs in their last name)
Of Monsters and Men (i actually kinda like this band, and they draw the hottest looking crowd, which is nice).
Avett Brothers (suckitude. left during their 2nd song, after i got all the shots i needed of these fuckers)
zipped across the river to The Sinclair, and found an onstreet parking space in Harvard Square... you know things are going your way when shit like that happens on a Friday night.
Ok Win. local guys who sounded very good. three guitarists, sounded like they had Clean and Soft Pack records in their rehearsal space
SM and the Jicks. freewheeling show, really awesome time. not much stage banter from Steve but some absolutely ripping guitar work.
Saturday:
Skylar Spence. disco rock, terrible. young white kids loved it.
Doomtree. hiphop collective with 5 multi-racial/gender singers. fun but not essential. Dessa is a total smokeshow, though. super hot.
SM/Jicks. stuck to a lot of the same songs from friday in a shorter set but still really fun. they tore into the riff of "Sweet Leaf" for a few bars before detouring into something else.
Sturgill Simpson. the guy's really talented and has a great band but it's not really my wheelhouse. still, a better set than the one at Newport Folk Festival this summer.
Father John Misty. best show of the festival so far. dude's got a great band, great voice, great command, and delivers.
Walk The Moon. bunch of dance pop crap that the kids with the neon face paint at the rail soaked up in large amounts. i was glad they had to endure the sturgill simpson set from close range.
left the festival, drove home to get my wife and we headed to portsmouth. after some oysters and beers we met up w/ friends at 3S Artspace.
Doug Tuttle: used to be in Mmoss, a NH-based psych band. never saw him solo before and we missed a song or two, but damn he was great.
Cairo Gang. Emmet Kelly's band, who plays guitar w/ Will Oldham's band. first song was really great, but then it meandered into boredom. closed out with a strong song, which was nice. joaquin phoenix lookalike on bass.
Mikal Cronin. Emmet played guitar and sang and the band was on point. two 12 string guitars blazing away sounded glorious. really, really fun. too bad there were only about 30 people there.
not too excited about anything on the last day of Boston Calling today... FIDLAR and that's about it. it's pretty lousy.

i don't think Satan's Satyrs opened for the PVD show.
Re: Who's Everyone Seeing Live?
So just saw Lucero on Friday with the second show of their new set up. The first half is acoustic and the second half is rockers. Totally enjoyed it. Probably 10th time seeing them and easily best so far. See if you get the chance.
After that:
All Time Low this weekend with daughter, doing the good dad thing
DBT Austin
JI ryman
DBT Nashville (bday weekend, yes you can buy me a drink)
Ryan Bingham Atlanta.
I love the fall for shows
