White Denim last night. I saw them with UR, CG, Bill in CT and Jonicont in Belgium a week or so ago and they were OK - it was a pretty short set and in hindsight they were probably a bit constrained by that. Last night however was a completely different kettle of fish. They started off in mellow mode and then after about half an hour played At the Farm and proceeded to blow the roof off the place. I'm convinced they're the best live act on the planet at the moment.

So, here's the dilemma:

I'm a big Jack White fan, but I've never caught him live in any incarnation. That is something that upsets me. He's playing at the end of July in Milwaukee at the Eagles Ballroom - one of my favorite venues from my college days. The issue is that it's on a Monday night and I live in Minneapolis, five hours away. To top things off, all of the tickets sold out, and the only place to get them is from the scum of the fucking earth stub hub people. I hate paying scalpers. Hate.
So, do I take Monday and Tuesday off of work, drive 300 miles each way, and give my hard earned nickels to stub hub, or do I hold out for a better opportunity?

The acoustics suck in at this place, but it's such a cool joint that I love going...

Tomorrow night I'm taking five 12 year old girls to see these guys. For those of you who don't know, they're called R5 (Rocky, Ratliff, Ryker, Rydelle and Ross - don't ask me which one's which).

Gonna have us a time.

Fuck all that. For the time, miles, money and little piece of your soul you'd invest in seeing this show you could probably find another show on the tour that's not sold out. I think you'd be coming out ahead even if it required a short flight to get to.

Every time I go out and buy new strings for my bass I see these damned neon strings that glow under black lights and I think to myself "What sort of tool would put those on an instrument?"
Well, you found him...

Went to see Lydia Loveless/Old 97's last night (Thursday, May 29) in Atlanta. Lydia was a no-show. I was disappointed but things happen. When I bought the tickets, I felt that the schedule was ambitious/hellish (New Orleans/Atlanta on consecutive nights) but that may have nothing to do with nothing. If I had to guess, she probably stopped off in Alabama to say hello to Smitty and one thing led to another…

Rhett Miller stepped in with a very enjoyable solo set and this was the better of the two Old 97's performances I've seen.

I knew next to nothing about Frank Turner, but he put on a great show. Fun songs, and a very entertaining back and forth with the crowd. I'd describe him as Billy Bragg minus the politics.

Isbell was fantastic (as always). Played his standard set, and the sound was great and the boys were in great form. I like the way they've worked up some of the quieter Southeastern songs like Cover Me Up to include the full band.

Setlist was more or less this:

Flying Over Water
Stockholm
Goddamn Lonely Love
Go It Alone
Decoration Day
Tour of Duty
Cover Me Up
Relatively Easy
Live Oak
Alabama Pines
Traveling Alone
Elephant
Codeine
Never Gonna Change
Outfit
Can't You Hear Me Knockin'

E:

Super 8

St. Paul & the Broken Bones were playing at the same time as Jason, so I missed them.

Today's agenda:

Shakey Graves
Grupo Fantasma
Kurt Vile & the Violators
Dinosaur Jr.

I knew about that Lee Bains show but not the Sturgill Simpson, so thanks for that nutfat. Got em both on the calendar. July 11 is a poker night, but it's gonna be tough to pass up a good one in Ardmore which is less than 2 miles from my house.
