Who's Everyone Seeing Live?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

I saw Dawes a few years ago (opening for Bright Eyes) and at the time, I thought they were just okay. Last night, they seemed like a totally different band. Confident, charismatic, crowd pleasing. Though i still think most of the new songs are mediocre, they played them well, and impressed with extended solos, etc. The sound was fantastic.

Shovels & Rope were just as fun as I'd hoped they'd be, though they got the old "opening band gets a bad sound mix" treatment. Still, the crowd loved them.

At the end of Dawes' encore, they brought Shovels & Rope back out to do a great rendition of The Traveling Wilburys' "The End of the Line"

Tying into the Chris Knight thread, I'd say this was one of the most well behaved crowds I've ever seen. No noticeable amounts of talking, no public drunkeness, no one pushing their way to the rail mid-set, etc. Now part of that was the fact that this crowd skewed surprisingly older (I'd say there was an even split between the 21-39 crowd and the 40+ crowd), and at times, the audience was a little TOO polite, but overall, a great experience.

there is :)

they looks like they play the same sort of instruments that Phish does, and do a lot of the same improv stuff but in a much more metal vein. they were rather fun.

White Hills destroyed. so fun to see these guys play.

here's a vid I took last night...it takes a while to get going, so if you are impatient, skip to the 4:00 mark.

Well, I didn't think they played klezmer music but still, a strange name for a band, imho. For those unfamiliar, lazar wolf is a character in Fiddler on the Roof.

*Edited to add these newly posted clips from Chip Robinson's performance at the Casbah on Saturday night:

Video: Chip Robinson at Casbah's songwriters circle
Posted by Dan Schram

Saturday night at the Casbah brought about the continuation of the venue's series of songwriters circle shows, with performances by Jason Kutchma, Chip Robinson, Kevin Abernathy and Mic Harrison. Below are three clips from songs played by Robinson, including two oft-overlooked ballads ("Psychic Friend" and "Two Candles") from the Backsliders' 1999 album, Southern Lines.

Robinson frequently digs into his back catalog from that era, but it's fairly rare to hear those numbers performed to a quiet and respectful room. The environment created at these types of events at the Casbah allows for songs of all decibel levels to flourish in front of a welcoming audience. It's also intriguing to watch the depth and soul with which Robinson performs these older songs—and to wonder what new material he might have still to come.

So tonight I went to the Afterthough here in Little Rock to see Arkansawyer musician Bob Dorough. You know his work. You can probably even sing at least the hook from one of his songs, which he taught the audience to sing in three-part harmony. I thought the man was seventy, maaaaaaybe seventy-five, from a distance and close up. After he left us, my friend Margo said, "Can you believe he's ninety years old?" I hope I look and think and sound that good when I'm eighty! Tomorrow, he's off to play Japan.

First time ever seeing the Stones last night and my son's first big time rock show. A great night! We had those $85 mystery tickets and wound up right along side the pit about half way up in the first level... $600 seats... sweet! It seemed that most of the people around us got there the same way (or via upgrade from the upper level), so I doubt many people spent the $600. But the arena was completely full and the show rocked. Mick is a freak of nature and Keith, Ronnie and Charlie are unbelievable. Mic Taylor jammed hard during a 15-minute Midnight Rambler (probably the best song of the night) and he also played on Satisfaction. Bobby Keys was fantastic too - I'd forgotten just how awesome those sax solos are in songs like Miss You and Brown Sugar, etc. Other highlights were Paint It Black, Emotional Rescue, Dead Flowers (with Brad Paisley - yes that Brad Paisley - killing it on guitar), Gimme Shelter, Sympathy, Can't Always Get What You Want and Keef singing You Got the Silver and Before They Make Me Run. I'd mostly given up on big arena and stadium shows, but wow what a show - the Stones absolutely positively still have it! Plus, made it home just in time to catch the OT in the Heat-Spurs game.

setlist (stolen from today's newspaper):
Get Off Of My Cloud / It’s Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It) / Paint It Black / Gimme Shelter / Wild Horses / Dead Flowers (wth Brad Paisley) / Emotional Rescue / Doom and Gloom / One More Shot / Honky Tonk Women / You Got the Silver / Before They Make Me Run / Midnight Rambler (with Mick Taylor) / Miss You / Start Me Up / Tumbling Dice / Brown Sugar / Sympathy For The Devil
Encore: You Can't Always Get What You Want (with The Crossing) / Jumpin' Jack Flash / Satisfaction (with Mick Taylor)

Son Volt played a solid and professional set but they were kind of uninspired and a little disappointing. Not one ounce of personality or joy flowed off the stage. Lots of dudes and bored-looking girls. The guy who switched off between pedal steel and keyboards (he also played guitar with the opener) was very good. Thankfully the show was saved by the encores of Tear Stained Eye, Windfall and Chicamaugua. Anyway, at least now I can cross them off my bucket list.

So this is how I'd rank the four shows I saw in the past 10 days:

1. (tie) Patterson Hood at Headhunter's house
1. (tie) The Stones at the Wells Fargo Center
^^^ these two shows couldn't have been more different, but the music at each was fantastic. Both very memorable shows, though for different reasons.
3. Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers at the Tin Angel - old-time country with a good, young edge. The real deal.
4. Son Volt at Union Transfer - disappointing.

I think that's par for the course for Son Volt shows in general.

Warren Haynes is in town tonight doing his symphonic Jerry Garcia thing with the NC Symphony at Red Hat Amphitheatre downtown. I may take it in from the perimeter. Word is, he'll be playing Wolf. Chris Knight is around the corner and up the street at the Berkeley but I'll probably sit that one out.

Short clip from yesterdays show.

This band is just an amazing live act! Lee Bains is the natural born front man. This week has been a blast. I've been a sworn fan since the album was released thanks to the people on this board. From the various clips on youtube it is obvious they step it up several notches when they play live, so I was prepared for RAWK, but still; this is Punk-Rock Energy in it's pure distilled form, the way it was supposed to be played (even before that term existed). One of the coolest things about the shows has been talking to the people in the audience (both friends and complete strangers) before and after, witnessing the transformation from "Who are these guys?" to hard-core fans running around with merch and albums to be signed. I spoke to several people yesterday who had been to all three shows in the Oslo area.

I am also very excited about the new songs they are playung. Can't wait to the new album hit the selves.

Springsteen last night. Managed to get into the pit so was only about 10m from the stage and boy does that make a difference in terms of sound and atmosphere. Got the whole of BTR, which was dedicated to James Gandolfini. Also got to meet up with an old university friend who I hadn't seen for about 20 years, skipped out of the pit they were doing the fiddly diddly stuff after Jungleland and got back in before they did the encores.
