An assorted lineup tonight at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville...a couple performers are the Shoals area's own Donnie Fritts and the great, great Dan Penn.

Great sweaty drunken fun in small rooms in Northampton and Hartford the last two nights. I'm hoarse and a little hungover. We heard 6 new songs in the two nights; I guess a new album may be on its way in late Fall sometime.

The opener last night, Fang Island, really blew us away though. Going to have to check out their stuff.

Both nights were in rooms that are way smaller than your usual THS show. Last night, we were eye level with Craig Finn the whole night and about 1 inch away from being on stage ourselves. It was really a bar that they played in, rather than a rock venue. Complete with all the Hartford insurance companies having a happy hour buffet before the show started. We were there when THS sound-checked and the insurance people were pretty confused. It was kind of funny watching their reactions. At 7:00 they kicked us all out so they could take tables out and get ready for the show. We promptly started a line, of course, but not before UR and Joe Jukebox grabbed a couple chicken wings from the buffet on the way out. They got in trouble for doing that, too, it was pretty ridiculous, the bar's waiter said it was for a reserved party, that was also getting the boot at the same time we were.

Regarding the music, THS were really tight both nights. Much better than the last time we saw them. Not that they were bad, it was just the beginning of them working out the arrangements without the keys and the addition of Steve on guitar. They seem to have found their groove now, and Steve is an awesome addition. Both nights were a hell of a lot of fun.

I really loved Fang Island too. We were disappointed they left before THS ended, the 3 of us would have bought their record, it was that fun.

Saw Wilco in Charlottesville last night (great show, great crowd), and when it was over, turns out Bloodkin was playing at a bar on the mall. Shit! They were great as usual. Was fun dancing up front and getting to hang w/ the guys a bit, but it was a bummer that there were only something like 30 people in the whole place. But those 30 were into it!

Low Anthem last night in a small outdoor arena in Birmingham. Another magical show; there's just something about this band.

NYC Ballet - Romeo and Juliet

Probably could have somewhat gotten into it if I were seated at an evening performance. On the lawn in the afternoon with a 2 year old made it more like a ballet happened to go on where was hanging out this afternoon. Anyway, nice way to spend a few hours on a nice afternoon.

Wilco next Saturday and Tuesday.

Holy fuck balls, tinnitus! I am always impressed by the way you use light (especially when a lack of it) to make your shots pop!

You must be using a super fast lens and a high ISO??!! What about white balancing? Any tips for an aspiring amateur?

thanks BV!

yeah i was at ISO 6400 for most of the set (some of the OFF! photos were lower, but not lower than 3200, and some of the Refused shots were as high as 12,800). also used an f/2.8 lens for pretty much all of it. i knew they'd be moving fast and wanted the flexibility of a zoom rather than using a faster prime. i had my 35 f/1.4 with me but hardly used it.

for white balance i always leave it an Auto and make any adjustments i need to in post-processing of the RAW files. usually there's not much to do with white balance, maybe cool it down a bit for tungsten or warmer for LED lights.

if you have any specific questions, send me a note.
