Can you explain this, please?
I would agree with Iowan on this with the small change of "supposed to
feel like as opposed to "supposed to mean". Rock & Roll is all about making one feel something be it angst, sorrow, rage or, in the case of The Weight joy incarnate.

We can if you acknowledge that Elvis, not Robert Earl, was "The King."

Well ok then. "Feel" and "emotional attachment" I get; it was "mean" I didn't understand.

I am at a loss. That ragtag choir that spun those harmonies that sound like gold has gone completely silent. And that makes me sad.

Blame Scorsese for that shit. Marty's wife said (paraphrasing) too bad he wasn't gay because Robbie Robertson would be the perfect guy for Scorsese.

It's a movie, folks, not a democracy. Movies need focal points/stars/heroes, call them what u will. And clearly the director had a man crush on only one of the players in the Band. Movie wise it seems to have been a good decision since
The Last Waltz has achieved legendary status. I suppose there may be a question whether RR colluded/collaborated w/ Scorsese to push RR front & center, but i don't know anything about that.

I love The Weight & The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down about the same. They are both perfect songs. The Weight does have more universal appeal. One that I love nearly as much is Acadian Driftwood. Levon really shines on that one too.

Perhaps Scorsese focused on Robertson so much because some of the other guys were so high most of the time

How is Levon's last name spelled in the credits?

"Why do all the best things always disappear?"
Get this and listen to it - some of Levon's best performances, you'll find.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Jesse_James I'm really touched by all the tributes I've seen today.
