Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires

They've gotten some love in some of the other threads, but didn't have one of their own so I thought I'd start it.

This is in the top of my list of favorite records so far. If it's not at the top, it's fucking right there. I pulled the trigger over the weekend and pre-ordered a copy of the vinyl because a couple of folks that I know ordered theirs and it already shipped. I'm hoping mine gets here by the end of the week. Can't wait to hear the mastered version. I've had the unmastered tracks for a couple months or so.

Here's an in-studio radio performance from yesterday with some interview segments:

Thanks for posting Olwiggum. I listened to it live yesterday and saw them Monday at the World Cafe. Love the new album too and pick up a master copy Monday night. I just wish I could download the WFMU session.

I love the album. The more I listen, the better I like it, though I have some quibbles with the production. Now they just have to come out to the West Coast. Though I think I'd travel for them now, too.

Really, really strong album. Might be the record of the year. Unlike a lot of bands from teh south I hear a strong Lynyrd Skynyrd influence. Am I wrong?

I don't necessarily hear the Skynyrd thing. Got an example? Just curious what you're hearing that maybe I'm not.

I heard some of the roughs that Lee mentioned (that Tim Kerr produced) in the WMFU interview. I'm glad they re-recorded the album. The Kerr-produced stuff was a little rough around the edges. It had a little more "grit" to it, but it was also more muddy. I think Lynn Bridges struck a nice balance or "raw" and "grit" and "clean" with his engineering somehow, if that makes any sense.

"Magic City, Heart of Dixie, Dirty South, USA!"

http://www.patchndent.com/?p=3728 Sounds like a Matrix. The other shows on his site from that night were Matrix recordings.

Patch N Dent just posted this show a few minutes ago. It's nice to be able to listen to this one again. I was right in front of ol' Wurtles for this one.

I think it's in the way the backing vocals are arranged and layered. I hear it in Centreville among others. As I'm listening now maybe it's more of a general seventies thing though. Either way I like it and it's one of the things that I think makes them unique.

I can see that.

Sidenote: I was fucking stoked to hear them play "laying track" in Bham a few weeks back. Now, if they'd also play "can't get right" from the Arkadelphia days, I'd be a happy man. I can live with "laying track" though. :D

You know I want to hear "Walker County Loathing." In San Francisco.

Or at my house would be ok, too.

I was thrilled I got to see them two nights in a row with Lurleen. Doesn't really get much better than that.

I hear a major Jason Isbell influence at times on this album. Roebuck Parkway, especially.

One of my favorite albums this year.

Lee does sound a lot like Jason on some songs. I don't know if it's an influence so much as just what his voice does. But I do hear what you hear.

I can't wait to hear this album, been on YouTube watching every clip I can find. Hoping to make it up to Louisville to see them this summer. When is the actual release date for the album?

Get someone to pick up a cd for you at a show. I've had mine for almost three weeks. Not sure about official release.

May 15th. I picked up my copy out of the used section at Schoolkids in Raleigh a few weeks ago without realizing it hadn't been officially released yet.

Funny what different people hear. A friend of mine that saw them with the Shakes at the Cradle this past Friday said they reminded him of .38 Special.

Wednesday was good but last night they tore the fuckin' roof off. That Rickenbacker bass is sweet. Chatted with the boys after the show and got my purple vinyl signed. Told Lee that Olwiggim said to check them out and my cool index went up a few notches

ha! I doubt Lee has any indication who "olwiggum" is. Did you tell him my real name? That, he'd recognize.
