HGM has never really clicked for me, at least the way he has with some of y'all, until I picked up Heart like a Levee today. Motherfucker, what a record; guess it means I need revisit the earlier records and give them the attention they deserve.

Welcome aboard Smitty! I think you can go two routes as far as you are concerned: Go with Lateness of Dancers next because this is probably the closest sounding to the new album and then older stuff, or (and this is what I would do) listen to Poor Moon and Country Hai East Cotton next

Or just go see them live, if you get the chance (assuming you haven't already.) That's when it really clicked and latched for me.

Parts of this album remind me of Glossary (in a good way, of course). Unfortunately that's not a reference I can just throw around elsewhere, but I'm confident it means something to you good folks here!

It really does to these ears as well.

speaking of which, we are way overdue for a new Glossary record.

Caught the show in Holland, Michigan. Very tame crowd, everyone sat. Why this was in an alcoholless venue in Holland and not 30 miles East in a smaller venue in Grand Rapids? I'll never know.

Still enjoyed the show. Literally hopped on the stage after and got all the band members to sign my vinyl. Photos with Phil Cook and MC Taylor, as well. They were very appreciative of the folks that came out.

Is that the town where Betsy Devos is from?

from what I've heard about that town, I'm more than a little surprised that they allow live music at all

Correct. Holland is one of the most conservative cities in the country.

BUT they have heated sidewalks so they don't have to shovel and a bunch of wooden shoes because they're Dutch. The most redeeming things about Holland are New Holland Brewing and Lake Michigan but I don't think those come close to making up for DeVos.

Thanks for posting that Aquarium Drunkard link.
I tagged along for that session and it was an awesome time.
Great studio - 513 Recording in Tempe. Really great vibe and wonderful people working there.
Was cool to watch Mike, Phil & Ryan work out those songs.

Also I'll be joining the Hiss crew for the April dates with DBT. Hope to meet some of you folks along the way.

I started a live series for the band.
Parker's Picks. Vol. 1 came out last week. Live At The Parish, Austin, TX, October 18th, 2016.
It ended up getting a lot more buzz than I expected. Paste wrote about it! https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/ ... -live.html

Austin, Texas. The Parish. October 18th, 2016.

Austin is one of my favorite cities in the universe. I have close friends and some kin there. The city feels very comfortable, welcoming in the funkiest of ways. I love the vibe. I was glad to be back, albeit briefly.

This was show #5 in as many days, at the start of a six-week tour that took us in a circle around the US, with a few stints into Canada as well. The trip ended up being about 13,000 miles total. Day 5 and we had already traveled from Durham to Asheville to Nashville to Atlanta to New Orleans to Austin. "Honkin' down the gosh darn highway," visiting these cities quickly, almost rushed, stopping long enough to preach the gospel of Heart Like A Levee to those who were hip, those who were ready. Heart Like A Levee hadn't yet been out in the world for two weeks, so the eagerness to preach was strong. We were anxious for people to hear it.

We were tired, understandably, but excited. Morale was high.
We were on an adventure.
I was just happy to be included on the team, a newbie on my first tour, away from my fiance (now wife) for the longest stretch of our entire relationship, forging a new, personal relationship with one of my longtime favorite bands - dudes who, aside from a few shows we'd worked together in previous years and a small handful of email exchanges, existed mostly through speakers & on vinyl records. Lucky me to be in the presence of such talent, such inspiration, such GOODness. I loved every damn second of that tour.

Hiss turned a corner at The Parish and it was obvious. To me, at least, but I like to think the crowd knew something special was happening too. They were attentive and appreciative. The energy on stage during HGM's set was gelling very nicely and it was noticeable early in the show, within the first few songs. It felt different than the four previous nights. Looser, but tighter, if that makes any sense. Mike even makes a comment about that during the set. "Finding the rhythm." Listen to the show and you'll get it, you'll hear it.

Scott was celebrating another trip around the sun, so there was a pep in the step because of that. HB brother Scott!
We were brought Torchy's Tacos for dinner by a friend of the band. We were fueled up!
We had a couple earned days off following this show before the next gig in Phoenix, with fun stops planned in the cosmic West Texas town of Marfa, and the beautiful White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. We were looking forward to visiting these places and having some down time.
But we were looking forward to the gig that night at The Parish even more and it showed. Goddammit it showed.
Like I said, morale was high, and it stayed that way.

Enjoy.

With the upcoming mini tour of Songs: Molina, I wondered what the connection if any was with any principals of Hiss and Magnolia Electric Co or Songs: Ohia and Jason Molina? Seems like I read it somewhere.
