Just spit balling here, no particular order:

Drive-By Truckers
Pearl Jam
The Rolling Stones
The Hold Steady
Lucero
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Wilco
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown

Just missing this cut would be anything Jack White, Neil Young, Skynyrd, Zeppelin, Foo Fighters, GNR, and Slobberbone.

No particular order, but I have difficulty placing the more obscure over the clear cut icons.
Beatles
Stones
The Who
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
Neil Young
R.E.M.
U2
My Morning Jacket
Velvet Underground

The only one not a household name here is MMJ, and personally I put them at my top. Notable exclusions are DBT, of course, Bowie, Springsteen, because it is not the top 11, and bands I just love like Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, Cheap Trick, and many others. It is like saying your man cave is the best part of your house, but you need the essential rooms like a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom more than the cave.

I have a funny Leon Russell story. I saw him 3 or 4 years ago at a small venue in Athens, the melting point. As part of his show his other keyboard player did a song solo, I think it was the Beatles Yesterday, the rest of the band stayed on stage, some guy walks up to the stage and tried to hand Leon a pen and piece of paper fr him to sign it. Leon looked at him like he was crazy and shook his head. I'm sure he felt 2 inches tall after that .

Stones
Bowie
DBT
Dylan (Who?)
Zeppelin
The Smiths
Motorpsycho

That's only 7...but then there are hundreds of bands and artist I really love as well, but I guess not to the extent, and not with the same impact, as those listed above . I guess I am more an albums guy than a band/artist guy.

Good question. Mine would be a VERY different list if it was current.

1. Sonic Youth

and the rest...in no particular order this week.
DBT
Wilco
Pearl Jam
Neil Young
The Band
Minutemen
Low
Sigur Rós

and like Slipkid said, a whole heck of a lot of bands sitting right below or interchangeable at any moment.

It'd be cool to do this with genres or albums within genres. I'm a nerd for lists.

I've been thinking about this a little, and I think the best way (for me, anyway) to tackle this is to just list the artists I listen to the most. They would be (INPO):

DBT
Isbell
Bruce
The Stones
Neil
Hayes Carll
Lucinda
McMurtry
The Beatles
Dylan

Just missing the cut...
Gram Parsons/FBB, TP, Dire Straits/Knopfler, Ray Wylie Hubbard, CCR/Fogerty, Hank

They were/are and always be the band I slobber over myself to listen to. Heard Daydream Nation in high school and it was a game changer.
