Re: drummers
If we're gonna include jazz drummers, 2 of the greats are max roach and billy cobham. Cobham's huge kit w/ a bunch of stuff he barely ever touched was a bit over the top, so cool it was kind of anti cool, but he can play for sure.
What used to be is gone and what ought to be ought not to be so hard

Never! Jim is the shit.
A few of my favorites that I don't think have been mentioned:
Elvin Jones
Tomas Hakke (Meshuggah)
Stanton Moore (Galactic)
Moe Tucker (Velvet Underground)
Danny Carey (TOOL)
Clyde Stubblefield
Julian Dorio (The Whigs)
Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket)
Nick Mason (Pink Floyd)
Patrick Carney (The Black Keys)
And of course, the master, Buddy Rich.

Ginger Baker is as crazy as they get but that man can sure as hell play.
We call him Scooby Do, but Scooby doesn’t do. Scooby, is not involved
Re: drummers
Hes' not a drummer in the traditional sense, but Brian Rosenworcel from Guster is a pretty damn good percussionist. Glenn Kotche from Wilco is an amazing drummer as well.

he's ok
THANK YOU! I can't believe this discussion stretched to a second page until Levon's name came up. The man has amazing feel and the subtleties and little nuances he throws in are divine. Not to mention, the boy can get fonkey!
Also as far as modern rock drummers, Wilco's dude, Glenn Kotchke is a beast.

Re: drummers
I think Steve Gadd and Kenny Aronoff are two of the best, technically. For being such a beast, Bonham had a nice touch (Black Dog, Levee Breaks, The Ocean). Along those same lines, Nicko McBrain has a way of adding tasty layers and fills to an otherwise sonic blast. I also like Old 97's drummer Philip Peeples because he brings the lumber while mixing in skiffy shuffle stuff. As for Peart, he tricks up his drumming too much for my liking. None the less, I can't help but grin when he plays one of those monster sized fills that starts at the 6 and ends on the second floor tom.
Have to add Weinberg, if for no other live song than "She's The One."

Agree with Dime about Stan Lynch, always thought he fit the Heartbreakers sound perfectly. Ferrone is more technically proficient, but Stan was just an animal. Also enjoyed Steven Adler, never was a great drummer, but I can't imagine anyone else playing drums on Appetite.

EZB isn't "technically proficient" in an LJ sort of way
LJ is going to say Danny Carey, btw
I love Brads drumming, When ever I've seen them do Homefield Advantage he kills it.
I prefer Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto, Bill Bruford, as rock drummers to Danny Carey

Word. Flea and Chad make up one of the all time great rhythm sections.

Jeff Sipe, I saw him play last october with Jeff Coffin, Kofi Burbridge, Felix Pastorious (Jaco's son), one of the best shows I've seen
Matt Chamberlain, I saw him play with Tori Amos in 02 or 03, he's an amazing drummer, he's played with everyone, this is his band with Skerik, and Mike Dillon

Re: drummers
As a (wannabe) drummer myself, I've always been drawn to the New Orleans/2nd-line style. Love the jungle rhythms.
These 2 are at the tops of my list (followed closely behind by Stanton Moore):
Zigaboo Modeliste - The Meters
Mean Willie Green - Neville's
On the R&B side, it's hard to top this fella:
Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, David Hood and Jimmy Johnson.

Ziggy Modeliste! Of course!
And has anybody yet mentioned the late great Al Jackson of the Stax house band/the MG's and Bunny Benjamin of the Motown house band/The Funk Brothers?

Re: drummers
Another drummer that hasn't been mentioned yet is Joe Dukes.
He was the drummer with Brother Jack McDuff for years and brought the funky riddims to those great soul-jazz organ combos in the '60s.
You can hear him on this cut:

And for selfish reasons, here's one more...Bryan Wheeler (BW to most).
He also happens to be my Pops - passed away about 7 years ago. Played with The Decoys when they first formed in the early '90s, Johnny Sandlin, Cowboy, The Convertibles (with Scott Boyer, Topper Price and Richard Bell who played keys for The Band after Richard Manuel died) and many other regional favorites from the Southeast.
Shown here with Scott Boyer of the Decoys and the late, great Topper Price on harp.

After seeing the Black Keys last night at the Fillmore in Denver, I have to add this guy
