Beating new Hayes Carll into the dirt.
I like this better than anything from last year. His best work. The album that 2019 needs.

I like it but I'm not totally crazy about it. A big reason is probably because None'ya was the single and it opens the album and I do not like it at all.Iowan wrote:
Man, this is good. Carll isn't prolific, but he's remarkably consistent.
Jesus and Elvis sounds like a lost John Prine song.

I like "None'ya" quite a bit; it's a clever love song of the variety that he's kinda perfected. The overall theme of the album (taking aim at conservative white male snowflakery) filters so well through his smartass style. And it's as musically diverse as anything he's done. Lots of soul flourishes, driving rocking country, folk, etc. "Times Like These", "Things You Don't Wanna Know", "None'ya", "American Dream", "Be There", "What it Is" and especially "Wild Pointy Finger" work really well for me. I kind of agree on "Jesus and Elvis" and maybe that's why it isn't in my favorites. On one hand, Prine has always been an obvious influence on Carll, on the other hand I just don't like it as much as some songs here.jr29 wrote:I like it but I'm not totally crazy about it. I'll definitely keep listening. I love Hayes and I want to be into this album more than I am.Iowan wrote:I like "None'ya" quite a bit; it's a clever love song of the variety that he's kinda per. On a big Snider kick lately. His early work has some dated production and what not, but there are so many great songs in these early albums.

The 8 disc Bobbie Gentry box set released last fall that arrived at my house yesterday. Never having heard anything other than Billie Joe, I am absolutely blown away. It's like a precious artifact from a far away place.

Nice. Wasn't aware there was a box set, much less 8 discs worth.GTO wrote:The 8 disc Bobbie Gentry box set released last fall that arrived at my house yesterday. Never having heard anything other than Billie Joe, I am absolutely blown away. It's like a precious artifact from a far away place.
