Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
got really into cheesy new age/ambient stuff last year. what i imagine to be ponytailed men in turtleneck sweaters noodling on synths, basically. this is a real highlight, actually pretty catchy too.

"Glad Girls" is the best Big Star song that Alex Chilton didn't write

That is a straight forward rock/power pop record, chock full of songs that should have been “hits” - Chasing Heather Crazy, Enemy, Fair Touching, Glad Girls, Twilight Campfire, Unspirited and Brides Have Hit Glass. Great record!Iowan wrote:

I've long wanted to jump into his discography and have always found it intimidating. Time to open the AOTW thread and get to work.
All it takes is one wicked heart, a pile of money, and a chain of folks just doing their jobs

This is something that gets said a lot around here, but it really does apply to this one. I'm guessing the timing of it's release, right at the peak of free file sharing and shortly after the end of critically acclaimed artists also achieving popularity on rock radio, has a lot to do with that.cortez the killer wrote:That is a straight forward rock/power pop record, chock full of songs that should have been “hits” - Chasing Heather Crazy, Enemy, Fair Touching, Glad Girls, Twilight Campfire, Unspirited and Brides Have Hit Glass. It was one of the highest-charting albums GBV ever released. A lot of GBV "purists" don't hold the album in high regard due to its polished production. For instance, the original version of the lead track, "Fair Touching", appeared on the 1999 Lexo and The Leapers EP, Ask Them. It's sounds decidedly more lo-fi in its original version.Iowan wrote:This is something that gets said a lot around here, but it really does apply to this one. Good luck with your Pollard immersion. It's a deep, deep hole, but well worth exploring. He champions the four P's of music - Pop, Punk, Prog & Psych.

Yeah. That's about perfect for a straight forward rock song.Beebs wrote:Iowan wrote:

I've skated around the periphery enough to know that there's something in there that connects with me. The mind of a perpetually drunk elementary school teacher/indie rock god has to be quite the ride.cortez the killer wrote:It was one of the highest-charting albums GBV ever released. A good one to move onto once you've worn out Iso Drills.
