I posted some Panther Burns (with Alex Chilton) video not too long ago, pretty sure it was in the "Random youtube" threadjr29 wrote:Crazy Memphis shit.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:

Ha...I have seen that video before. Classic stuff.
I'm not a huge Panther Burns fan but Tav is an interesting character.
The drummer, Ross Johnson, still plays around town from time to time and I see him fairly often at Starbucks, or at a Lucero show...at red lights...etc.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
good stuff but I'm not picking up the greatness that so many have. Relative to a lot of what passes for country music these days, then yeah, it's great, but on its own I find it to be just good solid music. No more no less

I think it's a collection of well written songs, incredible vocals, a very tight band, and great production.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:

I think sonically it's as much of a throw back to classic rock as it is country. Your assessment of this is identical to how I felt about "Traveler", FWIW.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
I'm not sure how to quantify it, but there was a massive jump between Traveler and A Room for me. Maybe it was the subject matter (the classic country themes are on display), the arrangements, whatever. I think the grit is up a notch, not so much in the production technique (which is very clean) but just in the sounds being made. The vocals on "Either Way" give me chills.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:I agree about TravelerIowan wrote:I think it's a collection of well written songs, incredible vocals, a very tight band, and great production.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:

Plus, it always makes me smile to see someone with such widespread conservative acceptance make weed songs.

Meh, that's par for the course these days. He'd be more interesting if he sang about crack.Iowan wrote:

Stapleton's decent but I think Jamey Johnson filled his role better. but in the triumvirate of Isbell/Sturgill/Stapleton that's commonly bunched together, well let's just say one is not like the others.
E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle.

I think mainstreaming those ideas in the era of Jeff Sessions matters. JMO.Smitty wrote:Meh, that's par for the course these days. He'd be more interesting if he sang about crack.Iowan wrote:

Regarding the triumvirate, I'd agree that one isn't like the others, but I don't think I'd be singling out the same one you are. To me, Isbell and Stapleton both work relatively safe ground that's palatable to a wide audience. Sturgill is far and away the envelope-pusher here. Jason might have been in position to be that guy, but that's not the route he's chosen.
For the record, I like Jamey Johnson a lot, but it seems he must be out of the game these days. It's been 7 years since he put anything out.

If we agree that they are both apples, I agree 100%Smitty wrote:Stapleton's decent but I think Jamey Johnson filled his role better.
At the least, Jamey Johnson is still out performing. He played a sizeable role in Warren Haynes' Last Waltz tour that just ended back in April

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
I saw Jamey in November and the show was probably 75% cover tunes. Big giant band, big giant crowd and it was like a bar band on a Saturday night.whatwouldcooleydo? wrote:If we agree that they are both apples, I agree 100%Smitty wrote:Stapleton's decent but I think Jamey Johnson filled his role better.
