My buddy Tyler Childers' album "Purgatory" co-produced by David Ferguson and myself has debuted at #28 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #5 on the Country charts and at #1 for New Artists.
This is HUGE for a debut album.
I could not be more proud or happy for this young man as he is truly deserving of what's to come. I'm also glad to see so many media outlets giving all the props to Tyler..far too often producers get way too much credit for an artists work and a producer is only as good as the artists they work with.

First heard a boot of him after Homecoming and while pretty good, but I didn't get the hype.Sterling Bigmouth wrote:Listening to this after a friend suggested it, and holy cow, I hope Childers and Sturgill Simpson keep working together, because this is great.Clams wrote:
After listening to the album a couple, I still don't. He's got a killer voice and a couple good songs, but I see folks placing him on the same level as Jason, Sturgill, Moreland etc and I just don't hear it. I do like that he's stretched his subject matter a bit on Purgatory (otherwise I'd just rather listen to Chris Knight). Maybe I need to see him live?
I'm still getting used to the fact that Jason, Sturgill and co. have brought this type of music so close to the mainstream; two years ago his record wouldn't have made a blurb in Rolling Stone or the like, now they do exclusive debuts of his new songs. It's great, don't get me wrong, just different, and I can't help but wonder what it would've been like if similar artists who released great records to little fanfare had come around now, in the post-Isbell era, instead of then.
Not sure if I articulated that in the best way; does it make sense or am I hipster?

I like Purgatory better than anything Isbell has put out in a while.
I probably like it better than "A Sailor's Guide To Earth" too. Well, it's more consistent maybe. The high points on Sailor's are higher.

I'm with Iowan, I think the Tyler Childers album is better (to my ears) than any of the last few Isbell has out. Feathered Indians opening verse is great...
Well my buckle makes impressions on the inside of her thigh

If i’d known she was religious then i wouldn’t have came stoned

I'll have to give it another spin. When I first listened to that one, I thought it tried too hard at being clever, like the kind of song Guy Clark would call "cute".bovine knievel wrote:I'm with Iowan, I think the Tyler Childers album is better (to my ears) than any of the last few Isbell has out. I've been kind of hard on almost every new record I've tried to get into lately; maybe it's just the extremely cynical state of mind I've been in.

Not saying he's the next Willie Nelson but I agree with this statement.
Also, strikes me as funny that no matter where I am or what I'm doing, I manage to I hear that "sounded like a train" lyric loud and clear.

Yeah I wouldn’t put him on the Sturgill/Isbell level, but Childers is only 26 right? Think he’s got a lot of room to grow as an artist and do some great stuff.

i'll be at The Joint this weekend, for Psycho Las Vegas. yeah, good room.chuckrh wrote:saw them a few years ago in vegas @ the hard rock on the strip. they have a really nice room there but don't book name bands often. i had disabled seating & much to my surprise they put me on a couch behind the security barrier at the side of the stage. it was an awesome show!
you definitely need to immerse yourself in Come On Die Young. then take on Rock Action and Young Team.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
You started out sounding like a hipster. I read it as, "I dont like this because it's getting attention. If it we're obscure I would love it." But by the end of the post I think I got what you meant. It's good. Or pretty good but doesn't stop you in your tracks or get you excited like some similar artists and you maybe feel like Jason being "discovered" is leading to a glut of artists like this because now a lot of people want to cash in on it and you wonder if maybe it is going to get watered down and before Jason maybe somebody who was real deserving and got passed over would get their due if they came along now.Smitty wrote:First heard a boot of him after Homecoming and while pretty good, but I didn't get the hype.Sterling Bigmouth wrote:Listening to this after a friend suggested it, and holy cow, I hope Childers and Sturgill Simpson keep working together, because this is great.Clams wrote:

Repeat.
"American Man" was one of my top 2015 albums. This is going to make a charge for that spot in 2017. God damn this band is awesome, and I'm going to see them in a month for $12.

The concept is really, really loose. To the point where you wouldn't notice it if you didn't know it was a concept album.Clams wrote:I question whether I have the patience for a concept album like that one.
All the songs can stand alone. There's no pretentious segments or short passages to sit through. Straight up rock and roll.
