Yeah, I'm a huge Dolphy fan and was really bummed that I couldn't make it to my local vinyl emporium to score one on black Friday RSD. I almost pulled the trigger on an aftermarket offering through Discogs that was about 20 bucks higher (which still would have been well worth it to me), but decided I'd better wait until after the holidays. Then, lo and behold, when I dropped by a week later there was one left. Luck o' the heathen strikes again.
I already have the Douglas sessions on some other versions, but this sounds so much better than any of them and the unreleased stuff is amazing.

Do you know if the Live at the 5 spot reissues are any better than the Prestige "Great Concert of Eric Dolphy" (which I bought in '74 and is mint)

It's not all the sessions that are in Great Concert, but this is the best you'll ever hear these sides. The other vinyl versions are probably not any better than your '70s original. I vaguely remember hearing about a remaster of the full sessions in the near future.

Cool. Just ordered it. Although 200 gramers are a pain. Have to change the VTA. Also had to buy some other things to avoid $20 in shipping (crazy!!)

^ I never worry about VTA--probably should, but I'm more of a set-it-and-forget-it guy. I love those 200g Prestige/Riverside reissues from Analogue Productions--everyone I've picked up has been perfect.

Absolutely. Caught him opening for BJ Barham a few years back, pretty incredible.

He opens for Turnpike in the Midwest a lot, and I think I've seen him twice. His albums are very solid, but don't quite live up to the show.
