What's Everyone Listening to?

Know of a great band you think we'd like to hear about? Got some music news? Or just want to talk about music in general? Post it here.

These guys keep popping up in other musical forums I follow, and most recently on Chris Shifflet's "Walking the Floor". Seem like they would be fun live. No wheel being reinvented here, just high quality honky tonk. BK and Clams' wheelhouses for sure.

The new Lavender Flu album, "Mow the Glass", was recorded in the living room of a small house on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You can hear it in the music.

[...]

"Heavy Air", the previous album, was a home recording project. The songs started with Chris on a guitar or a synth or a bowl of cereal and were built up from there.

this again, though set/disc 2 and 3 this time.

No one ever mentions the Velvets as a great live band, but fuck, this shit is revelatory. Hadn't listened to this in a good while and it's like hearing it for the first time all over again. No John Cale here so it's mostly guitar and organ centered musically. There are several long solos (forget specific songs) that are quite similar to Eight Miles High, lots of drone. And while guitar freakouts are all over the place here, they show their dexterity and touch with precise songs like Pale Blue Eyes and Over You.

Highlights of disc 2 are Venus in Furs (liner notes quotes Doug Yule as saying that the band played this only 4 or 5 times when he was a member), an insane I Can't Stand It, and nearly 10-minute version of White Light/White Heat which has a section that is very reminiscent of the jammier part of Buttholeville.

The last three cuts on disc 3 are a lengthy stretch of Heroin (8:28), Ocean (10:59), and Sister Ray (36:54). The Sister Ray is fuckin' amazing, it makes me think of Lester Bangs saying, in reference to an early VU show he saw, that it was like watching an entirely new genre of music being created right in front of him.

Good times 8-)

Definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm on board. Curious what you think.

Yeah I saw that write-up before I listened. I like everything about her - singer, dancer, painter. The record is raw and real. Too bad she sticks to the west coast bc I'd like to see her sing.
