Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
My issues with SMTF are about relatively bland songs, a lack of guitar solos/riffs, and a general "safety" to the material. I think that falls on Jason more than Cobb. As TC points out, he seems to have written it with his new audience in mind.
There are a handful of great songs on it, but I was hoping for something more.

This is more or less my opinion too. Cobb is going to make you sound the way you want to sound. I don't think he's applying a "Cobb sound" onto your songs (a la Phil Spector).Iowan wrote:My issues with SMTF are about relatively bland songs, a lack of guitar solos/riffs, and a general "safety" to the material. The closer you get to the meaning

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Really liking "Roman Candles" off the HWA. Sticks out much more than songs like "Throwing the Goats", which is what I'd consider to be a blues/bar rock type song

I really think you underestimate the effect a producer has on the sound of a record.Zip City wrote:This is more or less my opinion too. Cobb is going to make you sound the way you want to sound. BTW, "bar band" and "blues rock band" are not interchangeable and I don't personally think HWA or the Bottle Rockets fall into the latter. When I think of modern blues rock, I think of two camps: the Fat Possum-influenced garage-y blues of the Black Keys or early White Stripes and the more traditional BR of the Derek Trucks Band, Gov't Mule and Gary Clark Jr. I guess it's not a stretch to lump HWA under the blues rock banner although I think some amalgamation of folk, southern and jam rock is more accurate; the blues rock label carries some negative connotations that don't apply to HWA. I think they're closer to the Black Crowes or drivin' n' cryin' than the Allman Brothers but some people lump the BCs under the blues rock umbrella as well so I'll concede that you're not wrong. Labels suck anyway.

Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
Spotify just rolled over to "Blackland Farmer" off "The First Waltz", and.....well I don't know what else to call it but blues rock. The chord progression is clearly of the E-A-B variety.
I'm not using blues/bar rock as a pejorative, BTW.

Ascending into Madness, It Runs Together, Massacre and Burnt out Shoes are my favorites so far. I think " Dope is Dope" is the weakest track by far.Zip City wrote:Really liking "Roman Candles" off the HWA. Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
"Dope Is Dope " was the first of these songs to be played on satellite radio and I've never liked it.
The Bottle Rockets are as close to arena rock as they are blues rock.

Huh. I actually love that song. Probably my second favorite after Half Assed Moses. Truthfully there isn't a bad song on the record though.Smitty wrote:Ascending into Madness, It Runs Together, Massacre and Burnt out Shoes are my favorites so far. Re: What's Everyone Listening to?
I get that but don't most of the great Rock bands have songs with those kind of progressions? To me HWA is just Rock, Maybe with a southern flair and a dollop of jam band as Smitty suggests. He's also right that labels suck.Zip City wrote:Spotify just rolled over to "Blackland Farmer" off "The First Waltz", and.....well I don't know what else to call it but blues rock.
